Innovation First intros HEXBUG Ant

OK, along the lines of “25 useless facts about me” (or something like that) that you’re seeing pop up all over Facebook, here’s one fact – I love ants. Yes. I love ants. As a kid, I made ant farms up the wazoo. I read every single National Geographic magazine article about ants, I watched every single documentary on television regarding ants. I love ants.

Soo, you can imagine my excitement when I found out that Innovation First announced a new addition to their HEXBUG Micro Robotic Creatures product lineup called the HEXBUG Ant. Yes, this is indeed a robotic ant – complete with legs, antenna, and hooked claws. It moves along quickly using wheel legs and avoids objects in its path thanks to front and rear touch sensors. The inner body comes loaded with robotic “guts” which is “protected by a hard, transparent exoskeleton casing.”

The HEXBUG Ant will be available in five colors and is due to come out in April exclusively at RadioShack stores across the U.S.

Rubik’s Cube meets Touch screen technology with new Rubik’s TouchCube

The Rubik’s Cube meets touch sensor technology with the introduction of the new “Rubik’s TouchCube” by Techno Source – the “first completely electronic solvable Cube.” Sure to cause some controversy with Rubik’s Cube purists, the TouchCube looks like a standard Rubik’s Cube from afar but when you get up close and personal, you realize things are not quite the same. The six sides of the cube are completely touch driven with the cube featuring a built-in accelerometer, and colored lights for each of the squares. You simply move blocks and faces through simple finger swipes. Yes, touch technology is appearing everywhere these days.

The TouchCube attempts to mimic the game play of the traditional Rubik’s Cube – “swipe a finger across three squares and the lights will follow, “turning” a side of the Cube; make an “L” shape to turn the top face of the Cube a quarter turn.” Worried that holding the cube with your fingers will throw the motion sensors off? No worries – the built-in accelerometer helps the Cube recognize only movements made on the top side of the cube (though.. I’ll miss being able to move blocks around in all sorts of angles..)

Other features of the Rubik’s TouchCube include:

Built-in solver program which you can use to provide hints or use to simply watch the cube solve itself
Internal memory so it’ll remember where you left off with the cube
Choice of sound effects – do you want that traditional clicking sound from moving the cube squares?
The TouchCube also acts as a stress relief device – dock the cube on the display stand and watch the colors slide around while the cube recharges.

The Rubik’s TouchCube will be on display at the upcoming American International Toy Fair and will be available this fall for a price of $149.99.

LEGO Battlestar Galactica models – how cool is this?

Come on now. How can you not love this collection of LEGO Vipers? I mean.. they’re just plain awesome right? RIGHT!

But wait.. there’s more! In fact, there’s a collection of 35 Vipers, Raptors, Cylon Raiders, and custom figurines from the famed television series – Battlestar Galactica – all on display over at DVICE.com courtesy of organizer Ryan Wood.

Now if I only had the time (and the LEGO pieces) to make my own Viper.

WowWee expands Alive lineup @ CES 2009

Sega Toys Sega Piano

On display at NYC’s Japan C exhibit, is Sega Toys “Sega Piano” – the world’s smallest grand piano. This piano features a manual and auto mode. The manual allows you to play the piano (yes those keys are somewhat tiny!) while the auto mode allows the piano to play from 50 to 100 pre-loaded musical selections. If you’re into piano pieces, it’s actually pretty neat to see this tiny piano sitting in the corner playing back scores.

Star Trek TOS’s Captain Chair

Let’s be honest now.. every single one of you Trekkie or Trekker fans have always wanted to either sit in the Captain’s chair or actually own one for yourself. Come on… admit it! Heck.. I will! Well soon you’ll be able to buy your own version of the original series (TOS) chair – complete with functional lights and sound effects. CBS commissioned the folks at Diamond Select to create the chair and the folks at TrekMovie.com have a picture of it here.

Yes.. sitting in THE chair probably never felt so good! (Warning – this might not pass the wife test tho.. so you might need to think about getting another product for your wife in order to get the chair).

Not just regular sneakers.. Transformer sneakers!

Let’s see now.. we’ve seen Transformers turn into cars, planes, boomboxes, guns, cassettes, and um… sneakers? Yup.. that’s right you heard me right – sneakers … and Nike sneakers to boot! Takara has released a new Transformers Sports Label series featuring two models – Convoy and Megatron. Both Transformer models transform into a pair of Nike Free 7.0 shoes at 1/2 scale which translates to around six inches in length. Convoy is model TAK10699 and Megatron is model TAK10700 and both are available for $29.99. I certainly won’t mistake these models for usable shoes since I wear size 10 shoes.. but… I betcha someone’s going to try and wear these shoes at some point!

WowWee Alive Cubs bring a little aww factor to robotic toys

Dilus – the Bluetooth Teddy Bear

Who doesn’t love a cuddly teddy bear right? What about a teddy bear with say… a holographic display and Bluetooth wireless support? Even better right? That’s exactly what Brazilian industrial designer Bruno Oro de Abreu is coming up with in the “Dilus” teddy bear. With the holographic display, the Dilus can be used to surf the web, play games, attend remote classes, and basically socialize with other owners of the Dilus.

The Dilus was designed to address kids hospitalized for long periods of time in the hopes of raising their spirits, help facilitate learning, and increase interaction with others. The designer is currently working on the Dilus as a graduation project and hopes to have production units in kids hands by 2010.

Creep your friends with the NS-5 Sonny Robot.. errr… head

If you had a thing for the NS-5 Sonny robot from the movie I, Robot then you’ll be thrilled to hear that Sonny is available for purchase – at least from the neck on up. A Korean company is selling a replica of the NS-5 Sonny head for 135,000 won which is about $129 U.S. dollars. OK.. I’m sorry but I’m just not a fan of Sonny – for some reason he freaks the bejesus out of me!

The A.M.P. robot follows you around playing music

Hasbro Tiger Electronics is taking consumer home robots to a new level with the introduction of the two and a half foot A.M.P (Automated Musical Personality) robot. Looking something more like Rosie from the Jetsons, the A.M.P. is a two wheeled robot designed for teens and adults that basically follows you around and plays digital music. It’s actually a pretty basic robot from a functional perspective. The bot weighs around 15 lbs, is most black in color, and has infrared sensors to help it avoid objects at home. It gets around the house thanks to its two rubber wheels and keeps itself balanced via proprietary gyroscope technology. Unfortunately you can’t teach the A.M.P. new tricks and there’s really not much else aside from the movement and the music playing. Pre-sales for the bot will take place in August with retail availability in October. Expect the price to be between $400 and $500 dollars. Hasbro plans on selling the A.M.P. in places like The Sharper Image, Amazon.com and Hammacher Schlemmer.

Kung Fu Panda – Kung Fu Kickin’ PO

Oh dang.. I think I’m going to have to get this one for my wife. It’s the Kung Fu Panda – Kung Fu Kickin’ PO – a 7 x 12 x 13 inch replica of animated character voiced by Jack Black. This replica/toy features quick draw nunchucks and supposedly a real round house kick move (I just have to see this in action!). It features the voice of Jack Black, is recommended for kids 5 years and up and has a cost of around $35 dollars on Amazon.com.

Gear Live reviews the i-Buddy for MSN Messenger

Ah yes.. let’s file this one under “I feel like cluttering up my desk even more!”. It’s the USB based i-Buddy – a small translucent three inch figurine that reacts according to MSN instant messages. You can even program the figure to react to a specific MSN account – let’s say your significant other or someone you’re avoiding. Finally, the i-Buddy detects emoticons and yes.. reacts accordingly. The folks at Gear Live have posted a quick video review of the product here and finds the following:

We had a lot of fun playing with the gadget and our cat seemed to think he was there just for her. Note that the most response we got was when we were sent an angry emoticon.

If you’re a frequent user of Microsoft’s MSN/Windows Live Messenger, then you actually might find this toy fun to have around the desktop. How about creating one that reacts to all IM clients out there? Now THAT would be cool…
