Samsung announces new wireless USB System-on-Chip

Looking to enable consumer electronic devices with wireless USB functionality, Samsung has unveiled a new wireless universal serial bus (W-USB) System-On-Chip (SoC) design. The new W-USB SoC design is a single chip solution combining an ARM core, a UWB physical layer, and a memory controller. There are also interfaces for SD card, MMC, NAND flash memory, and high speed USB 2.0 On-The-Go.

Electronic devices enabled with Samsungs W-USB SoC chip will be able to enjoy secure wireless connectivity at high transfer speeds. As an example, the new W-USB SoC can download a 700MB movie in approximately one minute. Samsung claims the W-USB SoC performs at 480Mbps with an average effective data download speed of 120Mbps.

Expect to see the W-USB SoC applied to devices such as digital cameras, and mobile phones and eventually to wireless printers, projectors, wireless hard disks, wireless displays, and wireless speakers. The Samsung W-USB SoC is currently sampling and will be in mass production in the second quarter of 2009.

Fujitsu Notebooks to have Wireless USB

Realtek has announced that upcoming Fujitsu notebooks will feature Wireless USB built right into the system. Realtek knows this since the company is providing the chips to enable support within the notebooks. No word on which specific models will have Wireless USB but the systems will supposedly be available in the U.S. and in Europe.
