Confirming what most in the mobile industry already knew, Dell announced last week they were entering the smartphone market with the announcement and introduction of the Android-powered Dell Mini 3 smartphone. Dell also announced two mobile carrier partnerships, China Mobile – with a customer base of over 500 million customers, and Claro – a mobile network serving over 42 million customers in Brazil, both of which will carry the new Mini 3 smartphone.

According to a China Mobile spokesperson:

“We are excited for Dell to be among the first manufacturers to introduce new technology based on the OPhone platform. We look forward to working with Dell as it brings innovative new products and services to add value to our customers’ lives.”

Details of the phone models will be announced on a partner-by-partner basis when the devices become available in stores. (Let’s hope the MIni 3’s specs are better than the original rumors). The Mini 3 is expected in late November for China Mobile and by the end of the year for Claro.

Details are scarce but a couple of high level features are known (courtesy of the news conference). The LiMo Foundation announces the second LiMo compliant device built using the LiMo Platform Release 2 in the form of the new Vodafone 360 Samsung M1 handset. This latest Samsung handset features Vodafone’s customizable 360 user interface which provides “a new set of Internet services for the mobile and PC that gathers all of a customer’s friends, communities, entertainment, and personal favorites in one place.”

A new software update for the Nokia N97 is now available delivering new user interface enhancements as well as new functionality to the handset. Some of the new features found in the version 2.0 update include:

AT&T also announced that they would be supporting the upcoming Windows Marketplace for Mobile once Microsoft releases it later this year.

The HTC PURE will be available for $149.99 while the HTC Tilt 2 will be available for $299.99. Both are after a $50 dollar mail-in rebate and a new two year agreement on a minimum $69.99 plan. The PURE is available now at AT&T retail stores while the Tilt 2 will be available in the coming weeks.
