Here’s an interesting take on sustainable furniture. It’s called the “Expose LED bed” and it’s made up of a bed-frame, 2 bedsides, and 2 wall lights. What makes this furniture suite sustainable are the construction materials used. The furniture itself is constructed out of rotting teak planks which is then filled with energy-efficient LED lighting and clear epoxy material resulting in a funky lighting effect. Sure – the bed isn’t exactly for everyone out there but you gotta admit – it’s pretty “green”.

Now of course.. if you’re blaring music, you might want to reconsider placing anything valuable or fragile on top of these shelves.. but hey, it’s still a great space saving idea!

Pottery Barn is now closing out their Bedford Smart Wall-Mounted Speaker Shelf system for a low price of $79.99 (down from $199). The shelf system is made out of MDF, measures 48 x 11.5 x 9 inches, comes with two built-in speakers (1 inch tweeter and 4 inch woofer) for an audio device that can be connected via the input jack. There’s also a volume control knob on top of the connector.  The speaker shelf system mounts to either a dry wall or a stud mount only and is available only in a mahogany stain right now. The AN-AR300 features a built-in amplifier and 2.1 channel speaker system. The digital amplifier delivers 2×25 watts for the stereo speakers and 70 watts for the sub. Here’s an office desk design idea that seems perfect for a show like HGTV’s “Design on a Dime”. It’s the “Sync Desktop” office desk by Gareth Battensby and it’s designed to integrate the PC into an office desk while remaining practical. The Sync desk design integrates a tower PC, a foldaway monitor and wireless keyboard, and a USB hub. I absolutely love the idea of having a foldaway LCD monitor. When you’re not in need of the display, simply fold it down and reclaim additional desktop space. Love it. Other nice ideas include an easily accessible power button and DVD drive. Very cool ideas – hopefully someone will actually attempt to make it!

File this one under “Got to see this in person!”.  An inventor from West Sussex named Keith Dixon is set to launch a new armchair that floats on magnets called the “Lounger.” Inspired by items found in Star Wars, the Lounger floats on a series of magnets at heights up to 14 inches high. A pair of connecting rods prevents the seat from slipping off to the side yet allows vertical movement.

According to this article over at the Times Online, Mr. Dixon took approximately four years to design and develop the Lounger at the cost of tens of thousands of pounds. The chair will go on sale on March 14th for £5,875 with 2000 units being manufactured by his company called Hoverit.

The chair itself has a base and a see-through acrylic seat and was inspired by the Landspeeder vehicles from the Star Wars films. The chair uses three non-electric magnets which are powerful enough to support a person of 19 stones (which is 266 lbs).

The Lounger may cause some problems along the way though. First, folks with heart pacemakers should NOT sit on the Lounger. The magnets on the chair may discolor the picture of a television set within a range of 4 to 5 feet and you probably will want to keep your credit cards away from the chair since the magnets may accidentally wipe your cards.

I was looking through the latest catalog from Pottery Barn when I was surprised to see a product called the Piedmont iChair. At first glance, it looked like any other leather chair sold by Pottery Barn.. but then I noticed the picture of the iPod lying on the chair. Hmm curious. Then I noticed the name again – the “iChair”. Ah yes.. truly a sign of the times when Pottery Barn is selling products designed for the Apple iPod.

So what is the Piedmont iChair? It’s a leather armchair with speakers built right into the wings of the chair. The chair itself is made of top-grain aniline-dyed espresso-finished leather framed in hardwood. Simply hook the iPod (or really any other portable music player) and enjoy music right from the chair itself.

One downside – the Piedmont iChair will cost you $1499 (normally $1699).
