What to expect for Sony PS3 and 3D
Mick Hocking, a senior director with Sony’s Computer Entertainment, had some interesting things to say about the PlayStation 3 console and current/upcoming firmware enhancements related to 3D playback/content support. Here’s the quick summary of what you need to know:
- The current firmware released in June supposedly brings HDMI 1.4 support to the PS3 (although it remains to be seen how much of the HDMI 1.4 spec is actually supported on the PS3)
- The next firmware due out in September will bring support for Blu-ray 3D titles to the PS3 console.
- Later this year (no date given), a new firmware will be released bringing support for 3D photos to the PS3 (which makes sense given Sony’s recent 3D camera announcements).
Basically, you’ll be seeing a lot of 3D enabled content over the next 12 months – whether it’s digital stills, home videos, games, or online content from YouTube etc.
If 3D is in your picture, then the Sony PS3 definitely makes a great deal of sense from an future-proofing standpoint. Why buy a standalone Blu-ray player now without 3D support if you’re only going to need to purchase a new Blu-ray 3D player later on?
