If you’re a fan of what the chumby has to offer but you want something a bit sleeker and larger, then you’ll be thrilled to hear about the newly announced Sony dash personal Internet viewer. With access to all of chumby’s free applications (1000+ applications), the dash features a 7 inch color touch-screen display, support for audio and video content from Sony’s Bravia Internet video platform, the ability to run multiple applications simultaneously, built-in stereo speakers, built-in accelerometer, and a USB port.

The full specs to the dash are as follows:

• Video format support includes Windows Media Video 9 (up to MP@HL 1080p), Microsoft VC-1 (up to AP@L3 720p), MPEG 4.10/H.264 (up to MP@L4.0 1080p)
• Audio format support includes MPEG-1 Layers I, II, III/MP3 (up to 320kbits/sec), MPEG-4 AAC-LC (up to 192kbits/sec)
• 500MHz processor with 32kB I/D cache
• 7 inch capacitive touch-screen 800 x 480 resolution 24 bit color depth display with gesture support
• 256 MB, 667Mhz DDR2 DRAM
• 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi with WPA2 and WEP encryption
• Microphone
• 2 speakers
• Changeable themes for customizing the dash
• Two viewing angles – flat and upright

I briefly played with the dash at CES 2010 and I have to say it’s extremely responsive and sexy. The dash fits nicely in the living room, bedroom, office workspace, you name it. Priced at $199.99, the dash will come out in April.

There’s a new chumby in the wild and it’s called the “chumby one”. This new Wi-Fi enabled device joins the original chumby (now known as the “chumby classic”) and includes new features such as ABS plastic casing, a battery option, an FM radio tuner, and a volume knob. The best part? The chumby one is cheaper than the original chumby – $119.95 vs. the price of $199.95 for the chumby classic. AND for a limited time through November, the chumby one is available for $99.95.

Just like the original chumby classic, the chumby one provides access to more than 1500 applications spanning 30 different categories. You’ll be able to download a variety of widgets including Pandora Radio, The Weather Channel, and the New York Times. Other specs to the chumby one include:

• 3.5 inch LCD color touchscreen display
• Optional rechargeable lithium ion battery – about one hour of power on a full charge
• 1 USB 2.0 port
• 454MHz ARM processor
• 64MB SDRAM
• 2GB internal microSD card
• 2W mono speaker
• Stereo headphone output
• Accelerometer
• 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi
• Dimmable backlight
• One-click control panel access
• Measures 4 x 4 x 3.5 inches

So why is the classic more expensive? The classic is a bit wider, comes in a variety of colors, has an extra USB 2.0 port, comes with stereo speakers, and features an Italian leather housing. On the flip side, the classic has a slower processor, and only 64MB of NAND flash ROM.

If you’re looking for a cool holiday gift, definitely consider a chumby – whether it’s the one or the classic. These devices make great devices for the home or office – offering up information on the fly thanks to a Wi-Fi network and without the need for a PC.

• Watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and well.. it was OK. It wasn’t amazing and it wasn’t horrible.. but it was just OK. Now granted, I had lower expectations already going into the flick but somehow, the magic was gone in my opinion. I suppose it had something to do with the fact that I grew up with Indiana Jones (and with Star Wars etc), and now, it’s just not quite the same anymore (especially in light of how good Iron Man is). Oh well – here’s hoping we end the Indiana Jones movies for good… And please.. let’s not see Shia as a potential Harrison Ford replacement down the road.
• Continued to play with the Chumby over the weekend and it’s just a blast. I’m looking into how hard (or easy) it is to create a widget for the Chumby right now but overall – it’s a very cool (and cute) device. Can I recommend it for everyone out there? I want to say yes but at around $180, I’m not sure yet that I can. I only wish I had many more widgets to put on the darn thing! Stay tuned for a full review
• Finally, I took advantage of the Memorial Day sales this weekend and finally picked up an HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server box. I’ve been talking about picking one up for months now but finally got around to doing so yesterday. I also purchased a 1 TB drive to increase the default 500GB of space on the EX470. So far so good. I’ve been busy copying all of my files and multimedia content to the EX470 (it’s a lot of data) and also installing the Windows Home Server Connector software on my client Windows PC. My main work desktop was successfully backed up last night while I slept. Love it – that’s how backup should work – easily, quickly, and quickly.  Stay tuned for a review of this bad boy shortly too!
• I have a lot of other products to talk about over the next few weeks also. I’ve got a new HP Slimline box to review (it’s acting as our main Windows Media Center box now – it replaced the Apple box I had created a few months back), a new HP Pavilion notebook to review, and a couple of other odds and ends to talk about.
