We’ll start things off with the new iMac which features enhancements such as edge-to-edge glass, LED-backlit 21.5 inch and 27 inch widescreen displays, an all-aluminum enclosure, the new wireless Apple Magic Mouse, and updated CPUs such as faster Core 2 Duo processors as well as Core i5 or Core i7 quad-core processors.

The 21.5 inch iMac has a display resolution of 1920 x 1080 while the 27 inch iMac has a display resolution of 2560 x 1440 (60 % more than the 24 inch model from the previous generation). Both new models comes with IPS technology which delivers consistent colors across the 178 degree viewing angle.

The new iMacs also come with a wireless keyboard and the new Apple Magic Mouse as standard components. The Magic Mouse dumps mechanical buttons, and scroll wheels, in favor of a Multi-Touch surface which resides on the entire top of the mouse. Users use intuitive gestures to perform actions such as scrolling long documents, panning large images, or navigating pictures and webpages. The Magic Mouse can be configured as a single button mouse or a two button mouse.

Other system level features of the new iMacs include:

On the low-end of the desktop spectrum, Apple finally updates the classic Mac mini desktop PC with faster processors, more standard memory, larger hard drives, and a new server-oriented model which drops the slot-drive in favor of a secondary 500 GB hard drive for a total of 1TB of disk space.

The $599 entry level Mac mini now comes with a 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB of DDR3 1066MHz RAM, 160GB HDD, five USB 2.0 ports, FireWire 800 port, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M integrated graphics, and a SuperDrive.

The $799 Mac mini has a faster 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, and a larger 320GB HDD.

Finally, in an interesting move by Apple, the company announced a new high-priced Mac mini model ideally suited for server duties. The $999 Mac mini dumps the built-in slot-load SuperDrive in favor of a second hard drive which means you’ll have 1TB of disk space on this Mac mini (2×500GB HDD) as well as Mac OS X Snow Leopard Server. Add in the low-power consumption and small form factor of the Mac mini and you have the makings of a pretty sweet server box – for both the home and office.

I still remember my very first Gyration product. It was the Gyration Ultra Cordless Optical Mouse which I reviewed over at WhiningDog.net back in late 2002. That mouse made for an excellent HTPC mouse thanks to the built-in gyroscope and wireless capabilities… but it was still far from perfect.

Oh yes – one other notable Microsoft hardware announcement. The company announced four new special edition colors for their popular Microsoft Arc mouse - deep olive green, marine blue, eggplant purple and frost white.

If you’re not familiar with the Arc then you’re missing out on something very cool here. The mouse has a unique collapsible/fold design which transforms the arc-shaped mouse from a desktop piece to a portable notebook mouse. Even better – the mouse comes with a small snap-in magnetic micro-transceiver which attaches to the back of the mouse when not in use. ExtremeTech published a review of the new Microsoft Arc Mouse here on their website. The Arc Mouse is, as the name implies, shaped in an arc-like design and conveniently folds up like a clamshell phone for convenient portability. It’s also a wireless mouse powered by two AA batteries and comes with a small mini USB receiver which can also be tucked away underneath the mouse (or left on your notebook). Here’s what the publication thought of the Arc.

This is by far the most travel-friendly mouse you can buy, but its performance is a step behind some of today’s current crop of notebook mice.

On the notebook side of things, HP released two new entertainment oriented systems – the HDX16 and the HDX18. These notebooks feature built-in TV tuners, Blu-ray support, 1080 pixel displays, and multimedia options such as Altec Lansing speakers, an HP Triple Bass subwoofer, and Dolby Home Theater software. The HDX16 comes with a 16 inch widescreen display with either a 720 or 1080 resolution display while the HDX18 features an 18.4 inch Ultra BrightView 1080 pixel display.  The HDX16 will have a starting price of $1299 while the HDX18 will have a starting price of $1549. Both systems will be available later this month from HP.

On the desktop front, HP introduced their new all-in-one HP TouchSmart IQ800 series this morning. Features include a whopping 25.5 inch high definition widescreen display, a touch-based user interface, and a slot-load Blu-ray player. The IQ800 is wall-mountable which makes the system even more flexible in tight-spaced environments. Other specs to the TouchSmart IQ800 include  an integrated webcam, colored HP Ambient Light, media card reader, large capacity hard drives, the HP Pocket Media Drive Bay, and speakers. The TouchSmart IQ804 PC has a starting price of $1899 and will be available starting on Sept. 21st. The TouchSmart IQ816 will start at $2099 with availability slated for October 12th.

You may or may not know that HP also offers an array of digital picture frames. New as of today are a 3.5 inch model and a 10 inch cherry wood-finish frame. The new frames offer integrated clock and calendar options, support digital music playback, and come with integrated stereo speakers. Prices start at around $59 dollars and go up to $219.

HP’s VoodooPC division announced two new gaming mice – the HDX Laser Mouse and Laser Gaming Mouse with VoodooDNA. These new mice feature up to five levels of on-the-fly sensitivity, five programmable buttons allowing five different macros for five unique profiles (which means 25 different combinations). The HDX Laser Mouse will go for $39.99 while the Laser Gaming Mouse with VoodooDNA will go for $59.99.

Finally, there’s the new spill-resistant HP Wireless Comfort Keyboard and Mouse combo featuring a wave shaped keyboard design, cushioned wrist rests, three adjustable heights designed for more comfortable typing, 31 hotkeys, and programmable buttons for multimedia control. The mouse features a four-way tilt scroll wheel and two programmable buttons. The combo goes for $79.99.

Are you looking for something a bit more comfortable than a mouse? You might be interested in WOW Technology’s WOW-PEN Joy which is a unique take on the standard computer mouse – essentially turning it into a vertically oriented device that you grip similar to a joystick.

The WOW-PEN Joy is the first device to use a “vertical trajectory and horizontal structure” and significantly reduces soreness in the wrist after long hours of using a mouse. This should definitely be a boon for users who suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome.

The WOW-PEN Joy utilizes a USB port, measures 72 x 102 x 85mm, weighs 130 grams, has 5 default buttons, a resolution of 800 dpi, and supports all the major OS’s including Windows, OS X, and Linux.

WOW Technology plans on distributing the WOW-PEN Joy globally by the end of July with a retail price in the U.S. of about $30 dollars and about $45 dollars in Europe.

No… Flip open this mouse and you get a full functioned 10 key numeric keypad! That’s right – number crunch to your heart’s content! But wait.. there’s more! Take this mouse with you and it works as a standalone pocket calculator!!

OK.. all kidding aside now, this new Canon mouse appears to be targeting the mobile professional who needs that standalone numeric keypad – probably someone in finance I imagine.
