The new processors are designed to offer “outstanding performance” with low power consumption at low-price points – thereby enabling system builders to create power and cost-efficient systems optimized for Windows 7. The new processors with their 1ku price points are as follows:

Athlon II X4 605e clocked at 2.3GHz with TDP of 45 W and 1ku price of $143

Athlon II X4 600e clocked at 2.2GHz with TDP of 45 W and 1ku price of $133

Athlon II X3 400e clocked at 2.2GHz with TDP of 45 W and 1ku price of $97

Athlon II X2 240e clocked at 2.8GHz with TDP of 45 W and 1ku price of $77

Athlon II X2 235e clocked at 2.7GHz with TDP of 45 W and 1ku price of $69

Expect many more multi-core thin-and-light notebooks/desktop systems with low-price points and higher performance. Great time to be a consumer I tell ya!

The new 2.6 GHz Athlon II X4 620 is priced at $99 dollars for system builders – although pricing might vary by region. AMD claims that a bundle containing the Athlon II X4 620 and the MSI 785GTM motherboard (which uses the latest AMD 785G chipset) should cost around $170 dollars – a steal for anyone looking to put together a quad core system.

Spec wise, the Athlon II X4 620 is clocked at 2.6GHz, built on a 45nm SOI process, comes with 2MB of L2 cache, and has a TDP of 95W. There’s also a 630 model which is clocked at 2.8GHz with otherwise identical specs.

This along with the recent introduction of the Intel Core i5 processors means its a very good time to be a computer enthusiast.. or heck.. a good time in general to be a consumer looking to get a new computer.

That’s right.. the company announced a slew of new processors today – including new Nehalem based processors for the desktop and server market as well as a new chipset in the form of the Intel P55 Express Chipset. Without further ado – here’s a quick lowdown on the new announcements.

On the processor front, Intel announced the new Core i5 processor family, two new Core i7 processors, and a new Xeon Processor 3400 series. The new processors also are the first Intel processors to integrate both a 16-lane PCI Express 2 graphics port and a two-channel memory controller – which also means the P55 Express Chipset is a single chip chipset.

Here’s a rundown of the new models:

Core i7-870 processor; Base clock speed of 2.93 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.6GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $562 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 95 watts TDP

Core i7-860 processor; Base clock speed of 2.80 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.46GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $284 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 95 watts TDP

Core i7-750 processor; Base clock speed of 2.66 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.2GHz, 4 Cores/4 threads, 8MB cache, $196 at a 1K unit price, No HT, 95 watts TDP

Xeon X3470 processor; Base clock speed of 2.93 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.6GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $589 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 95 watts TDP

Xeon X3460 processor; Base clock speed of 2.80 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.46GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $316 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 95 watts TDP

Xeon 3450 processor; Base clock speed of 2.66 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.2GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $241 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 95 watts TDP

Xeon 3440 processor; Base clock speed of 2.53 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 2.93GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $215 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 95 watts TDP

Xeon 3430 processor; Base clock speed of 2.40 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 2.8 GHz, 4 Cores/4 threads, 8MB cache, $189 at a 1K unit price, No HT, 95 watts TDP

Xeon L3426 processor; Base clock speed of 1.86 GHz, Turbo Frequency of up to 3.2GHz, 4 Cores/8 threads, 8MB cache, $284 at a 1K unit price, HT enabled, 45 watts TDP

The new P55 Express Chipset supports 8 PCI Express 2.0 x1 Ports (2.5 GT/s), 6 SATA 3 Gb/s ports, RAID levels 0/1/5/10 via Intel Matrix Storage Technology, up to 14 USB 2.0 ports (using Intel USB 2.0 Rate Matching Hub), Intel HD Audio, and support for dual graphics cards in a “2×8” configuration.

So.. with new processor announcements comes.. reviews of course. Here’s a list of reviews from a variety of websites (along with blurbs).

Anandtech – “Core i7 870, i5 750”:

“Lynnfield shows us the beginning of how all microprocessors are going to be made in the future. Even AMD is embracing turbo, we’ll see it with Fusion in 2011. Extend turbo to its logical conclusion and you end up with something very exciting. Imagine a processor made up of many different cores, large and small, CPU and GPU. Each one turning on/off depending on the type of workload, and each running as fast as possible without dissipating more heat than your system can handle.”

TechReport – “Core i5-750 and Core i7-870 processors”

“The Lynnfield chips’ combination of price, performance, and power efficiency effectively clears the field in the desktop CPU market, leaving little room for competition from the Phenom II or older, cheaper Core 2 Quad processors—or even faster, pricier Core i7s.”

Tom’sHardware – “Core i5 and Core i7: Intel’s mainstream magnus opus”

“Alright, so the Core i5-750, specifically, is priced well. What is there to like about it? Reasonable power consumption, a base clock rate comparable to Intel’s Core i7-920, a more-aggressive Turbo Boost able to take the chip to 3.2 GHz in single-threaded workloads, CrossFire and SLI compatibility—it’s a pretty compelling list, actually.”

BenchmarkReviews.com – “Core i5-750 processor”

“Minor issues aside, the Core i5-750’s true strength lies in its Turbo Boost Technology. With it, the processor can automatically overclock all four of its cores independently to match the workload at hand. Down-clocking worked equally as well. Thanks to new power saving features, the Core i5-750 actually consumed the least amount of power out of all of the processors tested.”

Hardware Secrets – “Core i5-750 and Core i7-870 Processors Review”

“For the average user, Core i5 provides a better cost/benefit ratio than Core i7. It is true that Core i7 is faster than Core i5 even when we compare a Core i7 and a Core i5 running at the same clock rate as we did in our review, thanks to the Hyper-Threading technology that makes programs to “see” eight CPU cores instead of “only” four, but this difference in performance will be only worthwhile to professionals because a faster processing means more work done in less time, and thus more jobs for their clients and hence more money. We don’t see why a regular user would pay at least 45% more on a CPU that won’t give that much performance increase in return.”

The $599 base configuration comes with the following specs:

Espresso black color

Windows Vista Home Basic

AMD Athlon Neo processor MV-40 clocked at 1.6GHz

1GB RAM

Wi-Fi card

6 cell lithium ion battery

You can also opt for more powerful processor options including a new AMD Athlon Neo X2 Dual Core Processor (Model L335) clocked at 1.6GHz for $25 dollars more or the AMD Turion Neo X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor Model L625 clocked at 1.6GHz for an additional $75 dollars. (Note – if you do opt for the Turion Neo X2, HP requires that you update to Windows Vista Home Premium (which adds $30 dollars to the price) and to an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3410 (which adds $50 dollars to the price) – bringing the overall price to $754.99. Still not bad but something to remember if you want the more powerful Turion processor.

The new series, which is a part of their Embedded Slim series lineup, consists of two new models – the XS29 and XS29F. The XS29 utilizes the VIA Nano L Series processor while the XS29F is a fanless design utilizing the VIA Nano U Series processor. Given that the XS29F is fanless, you’ll be able to enjoy a noise-free, dust-free, and maintenance-free system.

These systems are ideal for individuals looking to perform light processing work such as web surfing, checking email, working on documents etc. while also maintaining great power efficiency and conservation.

Shuttle will show off the XS29 series at the upcoming Computex show in Taipei Taiwan with availability also expected in June.

When NVIDIA announced the Ion platform for the Intel Atom processor, I have to admit, I was intrigued. The thought of coupling the Atom processor with the GeForce 9400M GPU was certainly enticing because one could finally build a system with decent 3D graphics and video performance..and one could potentially do it on the cheap.

Yet as the months went by, news related to the Ion platform was few and far between.. that is until now. A company called ZOTAC has announced a new Mini-ITX motherboard product coupling the NVIDIA Ion platform with a dual core Atom processor (the N330) called the IONITX-A-U. The full specs are as follows:

Intel Atom N330 1.6GHz dual core processor

NVIDIA GeForce 9400M video

Mini-ITX form factor

D-Sub, DVI, HDMI video ports

10 USB ports (6 on back panel and 4 via pin header)

24 pin – 90 watt PSU included

RAID 0, 1, 0+1

5.1 channel audio

Measures 6.7 x 6.7 inches

DDR2 667/800 MHz memory support (2 slots)

OK.. this all sounds great but how does it actually perform? Well two new reviews of the ZOTAC board are now out – one from TechReport and one from Anandtech.

TechReport’s review had this to say about the board:

“Were I looking to build an Atom-based desktop or home theater PC today, I’d use the IONITX-A in a heartbeat. It’s easily the best Atom-based motherboard around and thus TR Recommended.”

Anandtech had this to say about the new board:

“Zotac did a good job of delivering pretty much everything I’d want in a board like this, going even further than expected and offering a solution with an external power brick. I don’t like the external power option from a long-term replacement standpoint, but I do appreciate its convenience. My only complaint is the price, at $189 it’s a bit expensive for the performance you get but I do concede that there are some benefits in the convenience department. All you need to add is memory and some sort of storage and you’re good to go, you’ll have a system that’s easily capable of playing back high definition content (not to mention very power efficient while doing it).”

Well there you have it. It looks like the new ZOTAC board is a winner.. except it might be a bit pricey.

One thought – might be fun to build a Windows Home Server box around this board…

UPDATE:

(5/14/2009-1:40am) – It’s not quite the same board but Newegg is carrying a ZOTAC board with the Intel Atom N230 processor (single core) and a 90W PSU for $169.99.

I almost never write about CPU heatsinks/coolers but the new SILENTFLUX passive pro cooler from Noise Limit Inc. certainly seems intriguing enough to write about here. SILENTFLOW is a non-mechanical, self contained system that utilizes “bubble pump technology” to deliver passive cooling to the CPU. Translation? Aw heck, I’ll leave that to the Noise Limit Press Release here:

“Noise Limit has moved beyond legacy cooling techniques, such as heat sinks and pipes, to create the next generation CPU cooling technology called SILENTFLUX. The patent-pending bubble pump design is based on a non-mechanical system that uses the heat, created from the CPU, to create hot liquid and gas bubbles which move through a hermetically sealed closed loop tubing and condenser/radiator to cool the system. The bubbles continue to circulate, condense and return creating the bubble pump. This efficient and lightweight all aluminum design reduces the need for the typical high power, high noise airflow thus creating a cooling system that is high performance, flexible, cost-effective with very low audible noise.”

Get it? Basically heat from the CPU helps to create hot liquid and gas bubbles within the tubing. The bubbles circulate through the system – removing heat from the CPU and then condenses back to start the cycle over again.

Now the best part of it? There’s no sound output because there’s no need for a fan. The next best part? The SILENTFLUX is compatible with Intel Core i7 Sockets LGA 1366, LGA 775 and LGA 1156 . Sweetness.

The heatsink measures 145.4 mm x 138mm and weighs 282 grams. No word on pricing or if this heatsink will be available to the DIY market. However, Wortmann AG, a system integrator in Germany, will be the first to use the SILENTFLUX in their TERRA line of workstations.

You can check out the product page for the SILENTFLUX here or the spec sheet (in PDF) here.

Just when we were all getting used to 45nm processors, Intel reveals that their next-generation 32nm processors are not far away. In fact, we might very well see the first 32nm processors for desktop and mobile systems as early as the fourth quarter of this year!

According to PC Magazine, the latest Intel roadmap reveals two new 32nm dual-core processors – Clarkdale for the desktop and Arrandale for the mobile platforms. These will be the first CPUs in the new “Westmere” family of processors – thereby replacing the 45nm “Nehalem” family which debuted as part of the Core i7 processor introduction. 45nm process technology was first introduced in “Penryn” family of processors which includes the current Core 2 Duo and Core 2 Quad processors.

Both Clarkdale and Arrandale are dual core processors – each with hyper-threading enabled. This means you’ll have two physical cores on the processor die and a total of four logical cores. These will also be the first processors with integrated graphics and memory controller on the chip. The graphics component on the processor die will be switchable allowing you to use discrete graphics instead within your system.

You can read more about the 32 nm process transition over at PC Magazine. Exciting times for the processor world – lower costs and smaller, faster, cooler processors. Great stuff.

The first round happened a few weeks back when AMD announced their new Phenom II processors – undercutting Intel’s quad core processor lineup. Intel responded in kind a few weeks later and now, it’s AMD’s turn to respond by releasing five new Phenom II processors including three quad core processors and the industry’s only 45nm triple core processors.

The new Phenom II processors fit in either AMD2+ or AM3 sockets and support either DDR2 or DDR3 memory. The five new models announced today are as follows (check the price list for up to date prices):

Phenom II X4 910 clocked at 2.6GHz

Phenom II X4 810 clocked at 2.6GHz – priced at $175

Phenom II X4 805 clocked at 2.5GHz

Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition clocked at 2.8GHz – priced at $145

Phenom II X3 710 clocked at 2.6GHz – priced at $125

Two early reviews out – one from Anandtech and one from ExtremeTech (we expect more reviews to hit the net as the day progresses). Anandtech had this to say about the new 810 processor:

“These new CPUs from AMD are good overclockers, good performers and they don’t have any real drawbacks unlike their predecessors. The most interesting CPU is the Phenom II X3 720; at $145 its only Intel competitors are the Core 2 Duo E7500 and the Core 2 Duo E8400, both of which are dual-core CPUs.“

ExtremeTech had this to say about the 810:

“AMD’s long anticipated move to socket AM3 is finally hear, but it disappoints somewhat with reduced cache sizes, clock rates and entry level performance. The price is right, though.”

With both processor lineups now roughly on par with one another, AMD is attempting to win over customers by simply offering lower prices. It’s a dangerous game to play for the company especially since they are now effectively fab-less. Intel can easily respond by lowering prices yet again – reducing processor prices to a point which will easily hurt AMD – even if they now have a competitive product.

Of course, all of this is great for you and I – the average consumer. It’d be great to have an inexpensive quad core desktop PC in the office.

On one hand, the processor itself is pretty sweet – offering decent performance at a low price point and low power consumption. Yet on the other hand, you have to deal with the crappy Intel integrated graphics that typically comes with the platform. Yes, all you netbook owners out there with Atom processors know what I’m talking about.

This is where NVIDIA’s new Ion platform is so incredibly important. Ion takes the Intel Atom processor and couples it with the GeForce 9400M chipset resulting in a system capable of playing 3D games and high definition video content.

I saw demos of the Ion platform firsthand at CES 2009 last month and I have to admit – I was sold on the idea.

Unfortunately I didn’t get a chance to actually benchmark the platform so I had no real idea what to expect performance number wise from the system. Luckily, it appears the NDA for the Ion platform has been lifted resulting in several websites releasing performance reviews of the new platform.

First up, we have the folks from Anandtech who received a white colored reference system from NVIDIA. Here’s a snippet from the review:

“Ion addresses one of Atom’s primary deficiencies – poor graphics performance. It can’t, however, make Atom something it’s not. It’s faster to use Photoshop on Ion than on any of the current Atom platforms, but I still don’t want to. It’s better to play games on the Ion than on a regular Atom system, but it’s not fun to. “

Moving on, the folks at LaptopMag had this to say about the Ion platform:

“Assuming Ion doesn’t take too heavy a toll on battery life, and that it doesn’t add too much to the cost of these very price-sensitive machines, Nvidia’s platform could very well redefine netbooks.”

Finally, there’s a review of the platform over at PC Perspective which has this to say:

“This is not a product that will win over everyone’s heart – gaming is okay, but not great, power consumption is still questionable and costs will go up – but I think more people will give the netbook market a look once they start to see ION-based products hitting the shelves. And of course NVIDIA is not only aiming for the netbook market; I would love to see ION-based platforms show up in larger, lower-cost laptops in the 12-15″ screen size range as well as in basic HTPC designs. ”

Clearly the Ion platform is a good thing for the Atom processor. We’ll get better 3D graphics performance, better video decoding performance, and of course, a better overall PC experience. Graphics and/or video intensive applications will receive a noticeable boost in performance on the Atom platform and even Windows Vista will become usable on the platform.

Yet despite the improvements, there are still questions to be answered – such as pricing and power consumption. However a bigger issue may arise out of the success of the Ion platform. Solving the graphics shortcomings with the GeForce 9400M chipset will ultimately push the focus of the customer back to the deficiencies of the Atom processor. Hopefully this will spur Intel and others to develop higher performing, yet low power and inexpensive processors.
