Remember the days of passing around a photo album? Come on.. you remember what that was like right? Flip through a small album while your friend next to you waits for you to finish up. Pass it on when you’re done and work on the next album. Seems like a long time ago doesn’t it?

Well, the folks at Digital Foci are trying to revive the photo album by bringing it to the world of digital images with the announcement of the “Photo Book”. Think of it as a slim portable digital picture frame encased in a soft leather-like (a.k.a. it’s not leather) case. Powered by a rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery, the Photo Book operates up to 2.5 hours, comes with an 8 inch 800 x 600 LCD color display, and a whopping 4 GB of internal memory.

Photo Book supports a number of picture transfer methods. You can transfer photos using a memory card or a USB flash drive OR you can connect the album directly to a computer via a USB cable and then transfer content that way. Memory card support includes CF, SD, SDHC, MMC, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick, and MSPRO.

You can organize your picture content by albums and choose a specific album to view on the Photo Book. Yes, it even supports slideshow views with a supposed “elegant page-turning effect” (we’ll reserve final judgment until we actually see that effect).

More importantly, the Photo Book supports RAW images from high-end digital SLR cameras (though remember – you’re dealing with a display that has a resolution of 800 x 600). Other notable features for the Photo Book include:

Copy albums directly from memory cards for USB flash drives to internal memory without needing a computer.

Displays each photo album with folder name and photo preview.

Optional displays show photo file name and slideshow counter.

Run automatic Full-Screen or Photo Book photo Slideshows with adjustable time intervals.

Scroll photos manually with zoom and rotate functions.

Supported image formats – JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, RAW image files from a wide selection of DSLR cameras.

Automatic photo orientation based on EXIF data.

Supported audio formats – MP3, AAC, WMA – music will play in the background during photo slideshow .

Supported video formats – MJPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 SP.

Built-in 1 channel, 1.4W speaker.

Runs on rechargeable Lithium polymer battery with 2.5 hours of battery life.

The Digital Foci Photo Book will be coming out in May at a price of $189. Expect to find the Photo Book at places like Amazon.com and Adorama.com.

Information is scarce at this time but it’s a good bet the frames support photos, video, and audio playback. While I’d like to believe the frame supports the “viewing of DVDs”, somehow I think Weblog Surf got it wrong. BTW – did anyone notice the broken English on the site? Anyhow.. I digress… It’s probably good enough to know that LG is releasing new frames.

Sony introduced two new models this week to their S-Frame digital photo frame series – the 10 inch DPF-D100 and the 8 inch DPF-D80. Both frames come with SVGA resolutions (800 x 600) and are the first Sony frames to feature 4:3 aspect ratios. Offering 4:3 aspect ratios might sound initially weird but if you think about it – it makes perfect sense. Most digital still shots are shot in 4:3 aspect ratios. 16:9 displays showing 4:3 photos will either zoom in on the picture thereby cropping it or add black borders resulting in a small displayed image size.

Here is the picture for the 8 inch model:

And here’s the 10 inch model:

Other features include:

Advanced image processor for quick decoding and display of images

200MB of memory

Supports Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD Memory Card, Compact Flash, Microdrive and xD-Picture Card

Supports JPEG, RAW (SRF, SR2, ARW) image file formats

Auto orientation sensor

10 Slide Show variations

Clock and Calendar views

Two index modes so you can preview several photos at once

Auto power on/off setting for morning/night

The Sony DPF-D80 is available now for around $180 while the DPF-D100 will be available in November for around $280.

Sony Ericsson is getting into the digital photo frame business with the introduction of the new IDP-100 Digital Photo Frame. The move makes sense since a frame makes an ideal companion product to a Sony Ericsson phone – especially one with a high resolution camera. If you’re buying a new Sony Ericsson phone, why not also get a Sony Ericsson picture frame right?

Sony Ericsson makes it easy to transfer digital photos from the mobile phone to the digital photo frame by allowing for transfer by Bluetooth, USB flash memory, M2 card, microSD card, SD card, or MemoryStick Duo card. Once pictures are uploaded to the IDP-100, the frame automatically rotates, enhances, and re-sizes the images to fit the frame. Other features of the IDP-100 include the following:

7 inch WVGA screen

Built-in Bluetooth support

M2 Memory Stick and USB compatible

140 degree viewing angle

10,000 hour lifetime before reaching 50 % brightness

200cd/m2 brightness

800 x 480 resolution

128MB of storage space

Weighs 320 grams and measures 205 x 145 x 25mm

The Sony Ericsson IDP-100 Digital Photo Frame will be coming out in Q4 of this year in a dark grey color. No word on pricing.

Is there anything Samsung won’t get their hands into? The company announced four new digital photo frames today – two 8 inch models and two 10 inch models (with each size category coming with a Wi-Fi version and a non-Wi-Fi version). The two 8 inch models are the SPF-85H and the Wi-Fi enabled SPF-85V – both of which will be available starting on Sept. 1st. The two 10 inch models are the SPF-105P and the Wi-Fi-enabled SPF-105V which will be available on October 1st and November 1st respectively.

The new digital photo frames come with a glossy black bezel with rounded edges as well as Samsung’s Starlight Touch Controls with integrated On-Screen Display (OSD) buttons directly into the bezel. These OSD buttons are capacitive touch buttons which disappear from the bezel after 10 seconds of inactivity. Another nice touch – these frames can act as secondary monitors for laptop or desktop PCs.

The SPF-85V and the SPF-105V offer Wi-Fi connectivity and are considered “Internet Photo Frames” by Samsung. The frames are optimized for use with Windows Live Spaces for easy photo sharing and also come with support for RSS feeds from USA Today. Here are some of the specs to the models:

It seems that digital photo frames are following a course similar to USB flash drives. As more vendors enter into this space, the more varied the products become. Just like a USB flash drive is more than just a simple USB flash drive these days, chances are a new digital photo frame will do more than just displaying pictures. Case in point – the Hammacher Schlemmer Digital Weather Station and Photo Frame. While it’s not the Swiss Army knife of digital photo frames, this display certainly adds a unique feature not commonly found on frames – your local weather report – and we do mean local!

The unit comes with an wireless remote outdoor sensor which you attach outside of your home. It then sends weather data directly to your display (with a wireless reach of around 100 feet) so you’ll know what’s going on directly outside of your home. Measurements include indoor and outdoor temperature, barometric pressure, relative humidity, phase of the moon, times of sunrise, sunset, moonrise and moonset, etc.

Other specs include:

7 inch TFT display

480 x 234 resolution

300:1 contrast ratio

128MB internal memory

Support for CF, SD, MMC, MS, and xD memory cards

Built-in alarm clock which syncs with atomic clock

Measures 7.5 x 8.75 x 4 inches

The frame has an MSRP of $199.95 – a bit expensive for a low res display.

According to the folks at the DigiTimes, China-based Huawei Technologies is planning to launch SIM-card enabled digital photo frames. The company is currently in talks with several telecom carriers in Taiwan and plans on introducing frames in Taiwan during the third quarter of this year. With mobile phones fast replacing home phones, it’s only natural to see more and more convergence among different consumer electronics. Combining a digital photo frame with mobile phone technology is similar to caller ID photos appearing on mobile phones themselves – except with much higher resolutions.
