pantouch clear

Pandigital announces the PanTouch Clear 10.4 inch digital photo frame – the thinnest digital photo frame on the market measuring a mere 1/3rd of an inch thin. How do they achieve this? By removing the darn rear housing found in nearly all digital photo frames out there. This means the PanTouch Clear is also easily mountable on the wall (although I wish someone would figure out a way to cut the cord someday).

Features of the PanTouch Clear include:

  • LCD “floats” in surrounding glass
  • Full touch-screen interface on fingerprint resistant glass
  • Easy to understand icons
  • 1024 x 768 resolution
  • 4:3 aspect ratio
  • 2GB of storage space
  • Built-in Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth compatible
  • 6 in 1 digital media card reader (SD, CompactFlash, XD, MS/MSPro, MMC)
  • USB connection
  • Programmable on/off times
  • Clock and calendar functions
  • Dark espresso wood frame with white and charcoal interchangeable mats

The PanTouch Clear will be coming out in May with a suggested retail price of $229.99. Stay tuned for a picture of the frame.

Photo Book

Remember the days of passing around a photo album? Come on.. you remember what that was like right? Flip through a small album while your friend next to you waits for you to finish up. Pass it on when you’re done and work on the next album.  Seems like a long time ago doesn’t it?

Well, the folks at Digital Foci are trying to revive the photo album by bringing it to the world of digital images with the announcement of the “Photo Book”. Think of it as a slim portable digital picture frame encased in a soft leather-like (a.k.a. it’s not leather) case. Powered by a rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery, the Photo Book operates up to 2.5 hours, comes with an 8 inch 800 x 600 LCD color display, and a whopping 4 GB of internal memory.

Photo Book supports a number of picture transfer methods. You can transfer photos using a memory card or a USB flash drive OR you can connect the album directly to a computer via a USB cable and then transfer content that way. Memory card support includes CF, SD, SDHC, MMC, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick, and MSPRO.

You can organize your picture content by albums and choose a specific album to view on the Photo Book. Yes, it even supports slideshow views with a supposed “elegant page-turning effect” (we’ll reserve final judgment until we actually see that effect).

More importantly, the Photo Book supports RAW images from high-end digital SLR cameras (though remember – you’re dealing with a display that has a resolution of 800 x 600). Other notable features for the Photo Book include:

  • Copy albums directly from memory cards for USB flash drives to internal memory without needing a computer.
  • Displays each photo album with folder name and photo preview.
  • Optional displays show photo file name and slideshow counter.
  • Run automatic Full-Screen or Photo Book photo Slideshows with adjustable time intervals.
  • Scroll photos manually with zoom and rotate functions.
  • Supported image formats – JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, RAW image files from a wide selection of DSLR cameras.
  • Automatic photo orientation based on EXIF data.
  • Supported audio formats – MP3, AAC, WMA – music will play in the background during photo slideshow .
  • Supported video formats – MJPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 SP.
  • Built-in 1 channel, 1.4W speaker.
  • Runs on rechargeable Lithium polymer battery with 2.5 hours of battery life.

The Digital Foci Photo Book will be coming out in May at a price of $189. Expect to find the Photo Book at places like Amazon.com and Adorama.com.

LG digital photo frames

LG Electronics is out with three new digital photo frames – the 7 inch F7000N-PN, the 8.4 inch F8400N-PN, and the 10.4 inch F1040N-PN. Information is scarce at this time but it’s a good bet the frames support photos, video, and audio playback. While I’d like to believe the frame supports the “viewing of DVDs”, somehow I think Weblog Surf got it wrong. BTW – did anyone notice the broken English on the site? Anyhow.. I digress… It’s probably good enough to know that LG is releasing new frames.

Sony introduced two new models this week to their S-Frame digital photo frame series – the 10 inch DPF-D100 and the 8 inch DPF-D80. Both frames come with SVGA resolutions (800 x 600) and are the first Sony frames to feature 4:3 aspect ratios. Offering 4:3 aspect ratios might sound initially weird but if you think about it – it makes perfect sense. Most digital still shots are shot in 4:3 aspect ratios. 16:9 displays showing 4:3 photos will either zoom in on the picture thereby cropping it or add black borders resulting in a small displayed image size.

Here is the picture for the 8 inch model:

DPF-D80_Digital_Photo_Frame_lg

And here’s the 10 inch model:

D100_lg

Other features include:

  • Advanced image processor for quick decoding and display of images
  • 200MB of memory
  • Supports Memory Stick PRO, Memory Stick PRO Duo, SD Memory Card, Compact Flash, Microdrive and xD-Picture Card
  • Supports JPEG, RAW (SRF, SR2, ARW) image file formats
  • Auto orientation sensor
  • 10 Slide Show variations
  • Clock and Calendar views
  • Two index modes so you can preview several photos at once
  • Auto power on/off setting for morning/night

The Sony DPF-D80 is available now for around $180 while the DPF-D100 will be available in November for around $280.
