Certainly not a great thing for low-end camcorder manufacturers but luckily on so many people will have the iPhone 3G S right?

Not so fast folks. According to TechCrunch sources, Apple has placed an order for a “massive number of camera modules” and based on the size of the order, it can really mean only one thing. A camera is coming to the iPod touch.

Imagine for a second – a camera found on every single new iPod touch sold around the world – each capable of taking respectable stills and video clips. Yes.. who would need a Flip Video or Kodak Pocket Camcorder after an iPod touch is in your pocket? It’s a small subtle enhancement but one that could easily spell trouble to the low-end camcorder industry.

Evil.. (and delicious at the same time).

Check out Olympus’s newly announced E-P1 – the world’s smallest 12.3 megapixel interchangeable lens system camera. No, it’s not a DSLR at all. It’s not exactly a point and shoot camera either. The EP-1 is part of the “PEN” family of cameras from Olympus which combine the optics of SLR cameras with the size and simplicity of point-and-shoot cameras.

With the E-P1, Olympus does away with the optical viewfinder and the mirror box thereby reducing the form factor of the camera body. Olympus also reduced the lens mount diameter resulting in smaller and lighter lens for the camera. The E-P1 also is the first Micro Four Thirds camera from Olympus – providing the same image quality as current Four Thirds format E-System cameras since it uses the same image sensor as the E-30 and E-620 DSLR models.

Now here’s a pretty cool new gadget. It’s the newly announced JVC Everio GZ-X900 (or Everio X for short) “dual-use camera” – capable of shooting both high definition video and high resolution digital still images. This lightweight, compact camera is capable of capturing 9 megapixel digital stills as well as near Full HD AVCHD video. Although it’s not entirely evident in these product images here, the Everio X is indeed a compact camera – capable of fitting into your shift pocket and weighing around 0.66 pounds.

Features of the GZ-X900 include:

10.3 megapixel CMOS sensor

Shoots 9 megapixel stills (no interpolation) and Full HD video with 1000 TV lines of horizontal resolution (ok so it’s not exactly 1920 x 1080)

10x slow motion shooting plays back 2.4 seconds of recorded video over the span of 24 seconds

Shoot at 3 ultra-high speeds – 120 frames per second, 300 frames per second, or 600 frames per second – the faster the speed, the slower the playback motion. At 600 fps, the resolution is 640 x 72.

Up to six 9 megapixel stills can be shot at 15 images per second

Shoot 5 megapixel digital stills while simultaneously recording Full HD video. Photos can be shot at shutter speeds as fast as 1/4000 second without interrupting video recording

JVC’s new proprietary optical image stabilization (OIS) technology

KONICA MINOLTA HD LENS with 5x optical zoom

JVC HD Gigabrid Premium image processing engine

Face Detection Technology

HDMI 1.3 with x.v.Color

Records video and digital stills to SDHC memory cards

Approximately the size of a “chunky smartphone”

Top-mounted zoom and record buttons with a second set next to the LCD screen

Camera is black with silver accents with the right side featuring a textured carbon fiber-like finish for a secure grip

Measures 2.6 x 4.88 x 1.46 inches

All this coolness does come at a price. The JVC Everio GZ-X900 will be coming out in June for a price of $999.95.

Nothing like new digital cameras. This time it’s Sony’s turn with five new Cyber-shot models (DSC-T900, DSC-T90, DSC-W290, DSC-W230 and DSC-H20) – four of which feature a new “intelligent auto mode” which detects scene conditions and automatically adjusts settings – especially for difficult lighting scenarios. The new mode also “enhances pictures of faces to capture natural skin tones, identifies when your subject has closed eyes, and helps reduce blur without damaging image quality.”

Sony also added several other technologies on some of these models:

Intelligent scene recognition – detects up to eight scenes, recognizes objects, faces, and lighting conditions. Changes settings to get the best shot in 1/13th of a second.

Face detection – detects up to 8 faces and adjusts focus, exposure, white balance, and flash, while also detecting motion.

There’s also blink detection which takes two pictures and saves one where the eyes are not shut

iSCN advanced – takes two shots within a fraction of a second using two sets of settings letting you select the picture you prefer

Built-in tools to edit, archive, and share pictures

In-camera retouch features – red-eye correction and image management

Group favorites and filter by baby, adult, all faces, or smiles

Remember the days of passing around a photo album? Come on.. you remember what that was like right? Flip through a small album while your friend next to you waits for you to finish up. Pass it on when you’re done and work on the next album. Seems like a long time ago doesn’t it?

Well, the folks at Digital Foci are trying to revive the photo album by bringing it to the world of digital images with the announcement of the “Photo Book”. Think of it as a slim portable digital picture frame encased in a soft leather-like (a.k.a. it’s not leather) case. Powered by a rechargeable Lithium Polymer battery, the Photo Book operates up to 2.5 hours, comes with an 8 inch 800 x 600 LCD color display, and a whopping 4 GB of internal memory.

Photo Book supports a number of picture transfer methods. You can transfer photos using a memory card or a USB flash drive OR you can connect the album directly to a computer via a USB cable and then transfer content that way. Memory card support includes CF, SD, SDHC, MMC, xD-Picture Card, Memory Stick, and MSPRO.

You can organize your picture content by albums and choose a specific album to view on the Photo Book. Yes, it even supports slideshow views with a supposed “elegant page-turning effect” (we’ll reserve final judgment until we actually see that effect).

More importantly, the Photo Book supports RAW images from high-end digital SLR cameras (though remember – you’re dealing with a display that has a resolution of 800 x 600). Other notable features for the Photo Book include:

Copy albums directly from memory cards for USB flash drives to internal memory without needing a computer.

Displays each photo album with folder name and photo preview.

Optional displays show photo file name and slideshow counter.

Run automatic Full-Screen or Photo Book photo Slideshows with adjustable time intervals.

Scroll photos manually with zoom and rotate functions.

Supported image formats – JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, RAW image files from a wide selection of DSLR cameras.

Automatic photo orientation based on EXIF data.

Supported audio formats – MP3, AAC, WMA – music will play in the background during photo slideshow .

Supported video formats – MJPEG, MPEG-1, MPEG-4 SP.

Built-in 1 channel, 1.4W speaker.

Runs on rechargeable Lithium polymer battery with 2.5 hours of battery life.

The Digital Foci Photo Book will be coming out in May at a price of $189. Expect to find the Photo Book at places like Amazon.com and Adorama.com.

ASIO5 will be on display at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2009.

Creating smaller compact camera modules will mean one important thing. Ultra-compact and ultra-thin mobile handsets will soon feature high resolution image sensors which means we won’t have to give up image quality for compact form factors. Here’s hoping a successors to the iPhone 3G will offer greater than 2.0 megapixel cameras.
