wdfCaviarGreen_SATA32 Western Digital has finally come to my rescue. Really folks – they have. I’ve been worried about maxing out my HP MediaSmart EX470 Windows Home Server but thanks to the newly announced WD 2 Terabyte Caviar Green hard drive, I can now upgrade my 1TB SATA HDDs to 2TB SATA HDDs – yes.. double the capacity for music, videos, and photos!

These new 2 terabyte Western Digital Caviar Green hard drives are based on 500GB/platter technology with 32MB caches. Features of the new drive include:

  • Reduced power consumption by up to 40 percent compared to standard drives using a combination of WD IntelliSeek, NoTouch, and IntelliPower technology
  • Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) technology
  • IntelliPower – fine tunes the balance of spin speed, transfer rate and caching algorithms designed to deliver both power savings and performance
  • IntelliSeek – calculates optimum seek speeds to lower power consumption, noise, and vibration
  • StableTrac – motor shaft secured at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize platters for accurate tracking during read/writes
  • Low power spin up
  • 3Gb/s SATA interface

Now the down side – these 2 TB Western Digital drives will set you back roughly $300 dollars (MSRP is $299). Considering 1TB drives are around $100 dollars these days, that’s a bit of a premium.. but these are hard drives of course which means prices will come down fast.

wdfWDTV

Western Digital entered the digital media player market this week with the introduction of the new WD TV HD Media Player. The unit plays back digital media content stored on external USB drives directly onto an HDTV set. WD TV HD Media Player will work with most USB hard drives that can be recognized as a USB mass storage device (although Western Digital would like you to think that you should really couple it with the Passport drives).

The device plays back music, videos, and photos with support for the following file formats:

  • Music – MP3, WMA, OGG, WAV/PCM/LPCM, AAC, FLAC, Dolby Digital, AIF/AIFF, MKA
  • Photo – JPEG, GIF, TIF/TIFF, BMP, PNG
  • Video -MPEG1/2/4, WMV9, AVI (MPEG4, Xvid, AVC), H.264, MKV, MOV (MPEG4, H.264)

The player also supports 1080p playback of MPEG2/4, H.264, and WMV9 files at 24 fps; 1080i playback at 30fps, and 720p playback at 60fps. The built-in AAC/Dolby Digital decoder supports 2 channel output – if you want surround sound support, you’ll need to route the digital audio out to an A/V receiver or something that decodes multi-channel surround sound audio.
