xperia x10 - 1

Sony Ericsson finally jumps on the Android bandwagon with yesterday’s announcement of the upcoming XPERIA X10 handset – their first phone to deliver Sony Ericsson’s new user experience (UX) platform built on top of the Android OS. Sigh.. another Android phone I just might be lusting after.

The introduction of the X10 also brings with it two new “signature” applications – Mediascape and Timescape. Timescape manages all of your communications within a single application – whether its emails, text messages, status updates with Twitter, Facebook etc. Mediascape is a centralized application for music, photos, and videos with access to content on the phone and on the Internet.

Other features and specs of the XPERIA X10 include:

MH907_black

Sony Ericsson brings motion-activation to the world of headphones with the introduction of the new MH907 – the world’s first motion-activated headphones that actually sense the user. To listen to music, simply plug in both earphones; to stop listening, just remove one earbud.

Yup.. that’s it.

Better yet – the same techniques apply to answering and ending phone calls.  What makes this all possible is Sony Ericsson’s use of SensMe Control technology which means users don’t have to worry about pressing any buttons at all.

The MH907 measures 164 cm long, weighs 25.32 grams, and is available in two colors – Yellow/White and Titan Chrome.

Head on over to http://www.sonyericsson.com/putyourearsincontrol/ for more information (including a short film) about the MH907.

Apple’s dominance in the digital music player market and growing dominance in the mobile phone market clearly has Sony worried. Reuters reports that Sony is considering developing a new combination game player/mobile phone device to “better compete” with the Apple iPhone and iPod touch devices.

Why should Sony be worried? It’s all about the developer of course!

The immense popularity of the iPhone/iPod touch coupled with the relative ease of developing for the platform has paved the way for thousands of applications in the Apple App Store. Increasingly more game companies are now developing games for the iPhone/iPod touch.. and therein lies the rub for Sony. It faces a threat of slowly becoming irrelevant as developers flock to Apple instead of developing games for say the Sony PSP.

The Reuters article states that Sony could be readying a new project team as early as next month to look into developing a new product which combines the key functionality of Sony Ericsson mobile phones and the Sony PSP.

Of course Sony declined to comment.

In an effort to encourage the developer community to create new applications for their phones, Sony Ericsson has announced plans to extend the mobile Java Platform support to their entry level 3G mobile phone product line.

According to Rikko Sakaguchi, Corporate Vice President and Head of Creation and Development at Sony Ericsson, “Sony Ericsson has made significant investments in the development of its mobile Java™ Platform, which has enabled an exceptional user-experience and consistent performance. We are confident that extending the Java™ Platform to a much larger global market will encourage developers to drive innovation and create richer user experiences for our customers”.

With this move, Sony Ericsson hopes the applications developed on their high end smartphone devices will eventually trickle down to the masses using cost-efficient 3G handsets – something that will be particularly important for emerging markets such as China. The real question is – is it too little too late to counter moves made by competitors such as Nokia, Apple, RIM, and Google?
