palm pre

We’re only a few days away from the launch of the new Palm Pre smartphone and by all indications, Palm and Sprint appear to have a hit on their hands. Here’s a rundown of various reviews of the Palm Pre along with a snippet from the article. Enjoy!

PC Magazine:

Yes.. it’s clear PC Magazine likes the handset – even to a point where they’re willing to give it their “Editor’s Choice” award. Nice. Here’s what they had to say about the handset:

The Palm Pre is the sexiest handset since the iPhone—and it also marks the dawn of a major new smartphone platform. Although it lacks third-party apps and has some battery life issues, it’s much more fun than any other phone Sprint offers.

Phone Scoop:

Phone Scoop is a bit more down to earth with the Pre. Here’s what they have to say:

The Pre offers a lot, but has some glaring omissions. If you’re willing to give up features such as video capture and don’t mind being limited to 8GB of storage, the Pre will offer you excellent personal information and messaging management along with a user interface that outperforms many others in return.

All Things Digital:

Ah yes.. as noted in our previous posting, Mossberg can’t stop comparing the new Palm Pre with the iPhone and on top of this.. he can’t stop talking about what might be coming from Apple next Monday. Despite this, he states:

All in all, I believe the Pre is a smart, sophisticated product that will have particular appeal for those who want a physical keyboard. It is thoughtfully designed, works well and could give the iPhone and BlackBerry strong competition — but only if it fixes its app store and can attract third-party developers.

New York Times:

Good ol David Pogue, another Apple fanboy, keeps his iPhone enthusiasm at bay while reviewing the Palm Pre. He finishes up his fairly positive review by stating:

So do the Pre’s perks (beautiful hardware and software, compact size, keyboard, swappable battery, flash, multitasking, calendar consolidation) outweigh its weak spots (battery life, occasional sluggishness, ringer volume)?

Oh, yes indeedy. Especially when you consider that Verizon Wireless has announced that it will carry the Pre “in the next six months or so.”

Can you imagine how great that will be? One of the world’s best phones on the nation’s best cell network?

If the story of Palm’s rise from the ashes really is like a movie plot, then that twist will give it one heck of a happy ending.

CNET:

CNET takes a look at the Palm Pre and like others has issues with the hardware (what’s up Palm?). However, it appears the software is again winning the hearts of many:

Despite some missing features and performance issues that make it less than ideal for on-the-go professionals, the Palm Pre offers gadget lovers and consumers well-integrated features and unparalled multitasking capabilities. The hardware could be better, but more importantly, Palm has developed a solid OS that not only rivals the competition but also sets a new standard in the way smartphones handle tasks and manage information.

Gizmodo:

Finally, we’ll finish things off with a review from Gizmodo. Jason Chen had this to say:

I’m bored of the iPhone. The core functionality and design have remained the same for the last two years, and since 3.0 is just more of the same, and—barring some kind of June surprise—that’s another year of the same old icons and swiping and pinching. It’s time for something different. The Pre may have hardware that’s worse than the G1/G2, but the whole package—the software and the hardware—isn’t bad. It’s good. It’s different. That’s something we can get behind. I can’t wait to see what Palm gets dealt in their next hand.

Wondering how many Palm Pre handsets are due at your local Best Buy? Well you might be able to find out by checking out this thread over at EverythingPre.com’s forums. Unfortunately not all of the store locations are currently listed but you can apparently request for that info. Looks like the stores in my area will be somewhat stocked with Pre – with the largest allocations in Los Angeles going to the Best Buy store in Burbank and Glendale. West LA will get 8 units.

BGR Palm Pre It’s been an interesting day in the world of the Palm Pre. First off, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam confirmed this morning that the Pre would indeed be coming to the company and that Verizon intends on selling the phone about six months from now (hmm.. I wonder if that stopped any defectors from heading over to Sprint on June 6th?). Heck.. that might even make me consider defecting back to Verizon and away from my iPhone.. just maybe…

Then, the Palm Pre made an appearance on day 7 of All Things Digital where Jon Rubinstein and Roger McNamee took the stage- answering questions about Palm and of course the Palm Pre. Here are some interesting tidbits from the session today:

  • Walt asks McNamee about his claim that all iPhone owners with expiring contracts will switch to the Pre. At what time will that happen? McNamee: 4:25 PM.” – funny stuff
  • Multiple apps can be run at the same time easily
  • Built-in support for Amazon MP3 store – files can be purchased and downloaded directly to the device
  • Can sync with iTunes and iPhoto. Pre apparently pretends to be an iPod.
  • Plug the Pre into a PC and you can use it as a USB drive, or use it to sync media etc
  • Palm’s equivalent to the Apple App Store is the “Web App Catalog”. There will be a dozen or so apps initially. Applications are downloaded over the air
  • Pre has a mirror
  • Palm expects to have a GSM version but no word on when

Also – check out this funny video of a “faux-advertising shoot” involving McNamee and Rubenstein and of course, the Palm Pre.

AND finally, the lucky punks at the Boy Genius Report have managed to get their grimy hands on a new Palm Pre. You can see their short hands-on on the phone here. Grrr..

If you’re wondering what the Palm Pre user interface and application experience will be like, then head on over to PalmPreForum’s channel over at YouTube.com. They have 22 videos of the Palm Pre emulator which should give you an idea of what the Pre will be like in your hand. I have to admit – the OS looks quite nice!

palm pre The guesswork for the Palm Pre launch date is now at an end. Sprint announced today that the Palm Pre will be available nationwide starting on June 6th in Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, select Wal-Mart stores, and online at Sprint.com. The price? A cool $199.99 after a new two year agreement and a $100 dollar mail-in rebate. You’ll also need to be on an “Everything Data” plan or a “Business Essentials with Messaging and Data” plan.

Palm will also offer the Touchstone Charging Kit (which includes the Touchstone charging dock and Touchstone back cover for the Pre) for $69.99 starting on the 6th. The dock and the back cover will also be available separately from Palm for $49.99 and $19.99 respectively.

You can read more details about the Pre over here at Sprint.com or at www.sprint.com/palmpre.

palm pre

The Boy Genius Report has some pretty interesting news regarding the much anticipated Palm Pre handset. According to one of their sources (and this rumor has yet to be 100 percent confirmed), Best Buy will be getting a small allotment of Palm Pre’s for a trial launch slated for June 7th. Approximately 4500 units will be available for Best Buy Mobile locations around the country – yes.. that’s not a lot.

Possible price points are as follows:

  • New Sprint customers with a 2 year contract will be able to get the Pre for $199.99
  • Existing customer upgrades will go for $299.99
  • Buy a model outright.. umm $999.99. Yes.. that’s a bit ridonkulous..

Now if you’ve been bummed that the Pre is only slated for Sprint (yeah.. I’m part of that lot .. sorta), then you’ll want to check out this rumor being reported over at MobileBurn.com (via Engadget Mobile). The site is reporting that Palm is readying a webOS powered smartphone called the “Palm Eos” for the AT&T 3G network slated for later this year. Details of the Eos include:

  • Full QWERTY keyboard
  • 2.6 inch display
  • 10.5mm thin form factor
  • 4GB internal storage
  • 2 megapixel camera
  • GPS

Pricing for the Eos is believed to be $349 along with a new 2 year agreement. All purely speculative of course
