Nintendo announces 3D portable gaming with Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo took its turn at the E3 podium this morning and announced the new Nintendo 3DS – bringing 3D gaming to the portable masses without requiring the use of glasses.
As with previous Nintendo DS incarnations, the 3DS features two displays but this time the upper display is a 3.5 inch 3D display while the lower display is of the touch-screen variety. Apparently fingerprint smudges reduces the 3D effect which is one reason you won’t be seeing a touch-screen 3D display here.
There’s a slider on the side of the unit to control the depth of the 3D effect as well as something Nintendo calls the “Slide Pad”. The 3DS also features a built-in gyro, motion sensor, and two cameras for 3D picture taking (pretty cool). Oh and it’s compatible with DSi games too.
So what’s it like without 3D glasses? Well according to Engadget, “you need to stare at the screen for a moment for your eyes to adjust and then not move around too much. If you do you’ll need to adjust again. But, stay reasonably still and it’s a compelling effect.”
Hmm.. mobile gaming and staying still. Somewhat contradictory at times if you ask me.. but then again I was never really into mobile gaming. I’m sure kids will love it though.
No word on price or launch date and yes.. that’s one hideous looking two-tone color scheme above.
