MSI expands their X-Series lineup of ultra-portable notebooks (which was first seen at CES 2009) with the announcement of the new X340 and X600 systems. Unlike the original X320 which had an Intel Atom processor on the inside for “long life mobile computing”, the new X-Series systems are designed for performance, multimedia oriented applications and thus feature Intel Centrino ULV (ultra-low voltage) processors on the inside.

The MSI X340 has a 13 inch 16:9 aspect ratio display, a weight of 1.3kg, and a maximum thickness of 1.98 cm (with the thinnest point being 6mm). Other features of the X340 include a full complement of I/O ports, an HDMI port, Blu-ray support, 802.11 b/g/n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth connectivity, and an optional WiMAX module. Expect the X340 to be available in three colors – Splendid Champagne Gold, Elegant Pearl White and Stylish Techno Black.

If the 13 inch display is a bit small for your liking, then you’ll be interested with the new MSI X600 which features a 15 inch 16:9 aspect ratio display. The system also features the Intel Centrino ULV processor platform, and weighs only 2kg.

Unfortunately there’s no word on pricing as of yet.

Someone needs to do something about MSI’s product names.. they are just darn right strange. Case in point – the newly announced MSI nettop series called the Wind Netons. That’s right.. Netons. What the heck is a Neton anyhow?

Making up the new Wind Neton product lineup are three systems – the M16, M19, and M22 – with the numbers indicating the size (or nearly the size) of the built-in display.

On the low end of the spectrum, you have the Neton M16 with a 15.6 inch display, a 1366 x 768 resolution, and a price of around $400 dollars. The M16 will be coming out in February 2009.

The midrange model is the Neton M19 which features an 18.5 inch display, a resolution of 1366 x 768, and sells for around $500 dollars. The M19 will be coming out in January of 2009.

Finally, on the high end, the Neton M22 comes with a 22 inch display, a resolution of 1920 x 1080, and a price of roughly $800 dollars. The M22 will be coming out in March of 2009.

It’s assumed that all the priced systems will feature the single core Atom processor although MSI plans on offering the dual core Atom processor as well. The single core desktops will come with Windows XP while the dual core desktops will feature Windows Vista.

Again.. what the heck is a “Neton”?

That’s what the folks at Wired.com’s Gadget Lab did with an MSI Wind netbook. They took a distribution of OS X (containing the necessary drivers for the MSI Wind) and installed the OS right on the netbook itself. Sure some components failed to work but overall, you’ve got yourself an inexpensive OS X based system as a result. Pretty nifty! So who else will try this out?

Looking to spread a little love, MSI has launched the new “MSI Wind Netbook Love Edition” as well as a new initiative called the “Love with the Wind” Global Charity Program ( you have to love these titles!). The new charity program will support “notebook donation programs around the world for children in rural and remote areas.” The aim? To teach these kids valuable computing skills. Now what’s not clear from the MSI press release is how this program will actually work. What kind of donations will MSI make? Will it be cash? Will it in the form of netbooks? It’s not exactly clear how individuals can help but the press release infers that the new netbooks will help the charity program.

Oh, so speaking of the new netbook – it’s called the MSI Wind Netbook Love Edition” and it’s labeled a special charity model. I suppose portions of these netbook sales will go towards the charity program? Again – it’s not entirely clear. In any case, the new netbook shows off a little lovin thanks to bright silver and gold heart patterns on the white chassis.

Now back to the charity program – MSI claims that the “Love with the Wind” program will provide charity donations (what kind of donations??? money? computers??) to Taiwan, China, Poland, Ukraine, Turkey, Russia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, Korea, and India.

Here’s another review of the MSI Wind notebook – this time it’s from the folks at CrunchGear and this is what they had to say about the system:

The price is right, the performance is right, and the portability is so right that it’s somehow wrong (in a right kind of way). I’m really impressed with this machine — MSI has a winner on its hands.

Awesome.. now if somehow someone could get their hands on this notebook here in the U.S.

Oh yes.. if you’re expecting to get the six cell battery version of the Wind, you’ll have to wait until August. Apparently the LG plant fire from March did a number on battery production. In the meantime, you can supposedly get the three cell version of the Wind but I’ve yet to find someplace that has them in stock. Truth is, if MSI doesn’t get the stock issues straightened out, they’re going to leave themselves open to an onslaught from the likes of Dell (and really any other major vendor looking to break into the cheap ultra-portable market).

Truth is.. with the possibility of an Atom based Dell Studio Hybrid system coming out shortly, I just can’t get excited by these MSI desktop systems anymore.

Think Linux and Windows XP are the only viable OS’s for the MSI Wind notebook (which isn’t available yet of course… at least not easily)? Well if you know what you’re doing and you know where to look, you can have a third alternative thanks to OS X. A adventurous fellow over at the InsanelyMac Forum managed to get Kalyway 10.5.2 installed on the MSI Wind. As you can see in the picture above, the OS thinks it’s running on a Mac Pro system powered by an Intel Core Solo processor (of course the actual processor is a 1.6GHz Intel Atom). Pretty nifty stuff! I’ve played with Kalyway before and I must say – when it works, it’s awesome.

First, there was the ASUS Eee PC followed now by the MSI Wind. Then ASUS followed with the desktop ASUS Eee Box which .. has been followed by the MSI Wind PC desktop system. Ahh.. so is the Wind PC better? No one knows unfortunately since details haven’t been released thus far.

However, ExtremeTech is reporting that the new Wind PC desktop runs on just 35 watts of power on full operations which also means it can run without a fan and generate less than 30 dB of noise. Not bad at all. The Wind PC measures 300 x 260 x 410 mm. Available specs include a 160GB 7200 RPM HDD, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n Wi-Fi, DVD combo drive, and a TV card. No word on anything else.

LaptopMag has published a review of the new MSI Wind notebook here on their website – giving the notebook (really ultra-portable notebook) 4.5 stars out of 5 stars and their Editor’s Choice award. By now, you guys probably know the specs of the notebook to heart so I won’t bring it up again. Here’s the verdict from LaptopMag:

If there were a Survivor: The Mini-Notebook series, and each of the ultra–low-cost notebooks were incrementally eliminated, the MSI Wind NB would be the one left standing.

Yes.. I do believe I have to get my hands on this beast… or at least child-beast.

This could be the best mini laptop so far — it’s comfortable to use, has a good display, is super-affordable and promises great performance

They’re not spilling the beans on the processor but we’ve already heard rumors that they are shipping the Intel Atom processor inside.. so that’s definitely good news from the Atom front. The specs that they did confirm are as follows:

1GB RAM

80GB HDD

Wi-Fi

Bluetooth

Three USB 2.0 ports

D-Sub video out

4-in-1 memory card reader

3 cell battery

10 inch 1024 x 600 resolution display

Finally.. check out their picture of the power brick.. it’s nearly as large as the system itself!
