What do you get when you combine a large 4.3 inch capacitive touch-screen enabled display and a 1GB Qualcomm Snapdragon processor? The makings of one sexy smartphone!! And that’s exactly what we’re supposed to get with the upcoming HTC Leo handset – due to come out in a few months time.

The Leo measures a mere 11mm thin and features:

5 megapixel camera with auto-focus lens

Built-in 2-LED flash

Built-in GPS

Bluetooth 2.1 support

3.5mm headset jack

WVGA resolution display

HSDPA support

On the OS front, the Leo is expected to feature Windows Mobile 6.5. Yeah sorry – no Android on this phone but who knows – maybe we’ll see Android down the road. I for one, am not a hater of Windows Mobile. I just wish the user interface would be improved. Not too much to ask for is it?

Thanks to a pal of mine at work who just got back from Hong Kong, I managed to snap up some pictures of the new HTC Touch Diamond 2 Windows Mobile handset. I apologize for these blurry pictures since they were taken with my crappy iPhone camera.

I briefly played with the phone and definitely found the user-interface to be fairly responsive. However, after using an iPhone for nearly two years, it’s clear that I’m expecting every user interface to utilize touch in a similar manner.. Unfortunately while the Touch Diamond 2 UI is good by Windows Mobile standards, it’s still no iPhone UI. Enjoy the pics.

Oh yes – check out this extensive review of the Touch Diamond 2 over at Unwired View where they say the following:

“Overall I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of my experience with HTC Touch Diamond 2. If you never used a Windows Mobile or HTC device before, it can take few minutes to get used to it.”

Those of you waiting on the Android-based HTC Sapphire handset for T-Mobile might be in for a small surprise. According to the Boy Genius Report, the U.S. targeted Sapphire will apparently feature a 5 megapixel camera instead of the 3.2 megapixel one. Yes, it’s a bit strange for HTC to come up with one SKU of the Sapphire for the U.S. and another one for other carriers elsewhere in the world.

Now as far as availability? Expect the Sapphire (or possibly known as the T-Mobile G2) in July for $179 after a new 2 year contract.

While we’re not physically at the Mobile World Congress being held in Barcelona, it’s not hard to notice the lack of real news coming from the Google Android camp. About the only really exciting piece of news came yesterday when Vodafone and HTC formally unveiled the HTC Magic – basically a slimmed down version of the Dream without the built-in keyboard.

The Magic will be available exclusively to Vodafone customers initially in the UK, Spain, Germany, and France and non-exclusively in Italy.

While we think the device is certainly attractive enough, there’s little in the way of the WOW factor here (stealing a page out of Simon Cowell on American Idol). This is really just a shrunken down version of the Dream (or G1 here in the U.S.).

According to Vodafone, the Magic will be available in white (pictured here) in the UK, Spain, and France, and black in Germany. Italy will have access to both colors (what’s up with the color segregation anyhow??)

Here’s what we know spec wise for the Magic:

3.2 inch QVGA touch-screen display

Built-in navigation trackball

Navigational buttons for quick easy access

Email options including Google Mail, POP3, and IMAP

Google Talk support

There’s no exact word on pricing or availability at this time – expect to hear about this from the local Vodafone markets.

HTC rolled out two new flagship Windows Mobile handsets today – the HTC Touch Diamond2 and the HTC Touch Pro2. Both smartphones feature HTC’s latest TouchFLO 3D user interface which is now more deeply integrated into HTC’s customized version of Windows Mobile 6.1 as well as HTC’s new Push Internet Technology which allows users to preselect favorite websites that then get “pushed” out to the handsets for faster retrieval. According to HTC: “Focused on making navigation easier and more intuitive, TouchFLO 3D brings important information to the top-level user interface, including quick access to people, messaging, email, photos, music and weather. As part of this improved Windows Mobile integration the touch focus areas have been enlarged to be more finger-touch friendly.”

HTC also introduces “HTC Straight Talk” with the new Touch Pro2 handset. Users can transition seamlessly from email to single or multi-party conference calls and turn any location into a conference room.

In addition to the new simplified calling experience, Straight Talk includes an innovative mechanical and acoustic design that features a sophisticated speakerphone experience similar to those found in corporate boardrooms. Straight Talk delivers a high-fidelity voice and sound experience enhanced by asymmetric speakers and advanced noise suppression with full duplex acoustics. When the Touch Pro2 is flipped over it automatically turns into a conference room speakerphone system.”

Basically the concept is – go from an email message to a conference call with all the necessary attendees in a single click. See an email that needs a fast response? Click a button on the email to call them. Straight Talk aims to make conference calls easy and reliable in quality.

Now as far as availability is concerned, the Touch Diamond2 will be available in Europe and Asia in early Q2 with worldwide availability later this year while the Touch Pro2 will be available around the world during the early summer. No word on pricing as of yet.

This latest smartphone from HTC features a more compact design than previous models, and a new application called HTC Footprints. Footprints allows you to capture small digital postcards of all the places you go with the Touch Cruise – yes, a digital diary of sorts. Once you’ve captured an image, you can take notes, or add in a sound byte through an audio clip and associate it to the Footprint. Of course, since we’re talking about a GPS enabled phone, Footprints will geo-tag your postcard – providing location information – as well as auto-name it with the general location or area it was taken in.

The Touch Cruise can also be used as an advanced in-car navigation system. Simply place the unit in the accompanying car cradle, and use the Touch Cruise’s one-touch user interface for turn by turn directions.

Features and specs of the Touch Cruise include the following:

2.8 inch touch-sensitive QVGA display

HTC TouchFlo interface

Support for WCDMA/HSPA: 900/2100MHz. HSDPA 7.2 Mbps

Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional OS

4 way navigation wheel

3.2 megapixel with fixed focus lens

512MB ROM, 256MB RAM

microSD slot

Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR

802.11 b/g Wi-Fi

Built-in GPS

miniUSB 2.0 and audio jack in one

Audio format support includes AAC, AAC+, eAAC+, AMR, AWB, QCP, MP3, WMA, WAV, MIDI

Video format support includes WMV, ASF, MP4, 3GP, 3G2, M4V, AVI

Qualcomm MSM7225 528MHz processor

Expect the HTC Touch Cruise to come out in the Spring of this year. DigiTimes reports that O2 will market the Touch Cruise under the O2 XDA Guide name.

The phone is apparently thinner thanks to the fact that it no longer has a built-in QWERTY keyboard. No word on specs but thanks to the back of the phone we know it has at least a 3.2 megapixel camera (I know.. we’re geniuses here). Gizmodo’s source claims the phone should be coming out in the middle of May.
