HP acquires 3Com for 2.7 billion

Some big news in the networking world – HP announced today that they have entered into a “definitive agreement” where HP will purchase 3Com for a price of $7.90 per share or approximately $2.7 billion dollars. The terms of the transactions have been approved by the HP and 3Com boards of directors.

By purchasing 3COM, HP will benefit from 3Com’s portfolio of networking products – especially strengthening the company’s position in China which is one of the world’s fastest growing markets. According to Dave Donatelli, executive VP and GM of the Enterprise Servers and Networking group at HP,

“By acquiring 3Com, we are accelerating the execution of our Converged Infrastructure strategy and bringing disruptive change to the networking industry. By combining HP ProCurve offerings with 3Com’s extensive set of solutions, we will enable customers to build a next-generation network infrastructure that supports customer needs from the edge of the network to the heart of the data center”

This purchase will also complement HP’s vision of being a one-stop shop for all things related to data centers – from servers to storage; from networking to management; and of course services.

This deal is expected to close in the first half of 2010.

HP’s new business systems – the ProBook notebooks and Elite 7000 desktop PCs

With Microsoft set to release Windows 7 in 10 days, it’s not surprising to see a growing number of new PC announcements. Today’s apparently HP’s turn as the company unveiled several new business oriented systems including new ProBook notebook models, the new HP Elite 7000 Business Desktop PC, and new HP docking stations.

We’ll start things off with the new ProBook 6445b and 6545b. Features of these business notebooks include:

Battery life improved up to 60 percent – up to 8 hours and 15 minutes

HP announces several multitouch-enabled PCs

HP goes all-in with multitouch computing with a bevy of new multitouch-enabled product announcements including three new consumer HP TouchSmart PCs, a new business oriented all-in-one touch-enabled PC, and the company’s first fully interactive 42 inch HD digital signage touch display. Here’s the complete breakdown of the new product announcements.

New Consumer HP TouchSmart PCs:

In the desktop PC front, HP announces new TouchSmart PC models spanning 20 and 23 inch widescreen systems. The new models include the HP TouchSmart 300 and the HP TouchSmart 600 – both of which feature:

Supports either HD capable or HD widescreen display with a multitouch enabled screen

HP introduces SkyRoom video conferencing software

HP announced today a new affordable high-definition video conferencing system called HP SkyRoom which promises to offer live, real-time collaboration for “instant face-to-face meetings with no subscription fees.”

Based on video and image communication technology developed at HP Labs (some of which was apparently used by NASA’s Mars rovers to transfer high resolution images back to Earth), HP SkyRoom is the only videoconferencing tool to provide real-time collaboration for up to four people over a standard business network for $149 dollars.

SkyRoom allows users to share practically any application on their PC or workstation with other participants on the call. This includes office productivity applications, streaming video apps, and even interactive 3-D applications. Simply click on a contact to connect to (which enables the session) and then select the application to share. All participants are displayed along the side allowing everyone to see one antoher.

Key features of HP’s SkyRoom include:

Multithreaded video engine enables all participants to see the presenter’s display and each other through a multiway videoconferencing session
Enables the display of 2-D and 3-D graphics, full-motion video, and multi-display on a system that only has a 2-D graphics card
SkyRoom software only transmits data that has been changed between frames (not the entire display) which it then compresses and encrypts before sending to all the participants.

HP SkyRoom is available worldwide pre-installed at no cost on the HP Z800, Z600, Z400 and xw4600 workstations. Select premium business PCs and notebooks due out from the company will also include a 90 day trial of HP SkyRoom. Customers using current HP hardware or other non-HP hardware can purchase SkyRoom for $149 dollars.

Minimal requirements for SkyRoom include an Intel Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz processor with 2GB of RAM, a webcam, and Microsoft Windows XP or Vista. You’ll need a network connection of at least 400kb/second. SkyRoom must run over a corporate VPN to connect to systems outside of the firewall.

HP relaunches ENVY brand with ENVY 13 and ENVY 15 notebooks

If you’ve been following the PC industry for a few years then you’ll remember that the ENVY brand was originally for Voodoo products (later on HP Voodoo). As with many of today’s HP announcements, don’t expect the Pavilion dm3 to launch before Windows 7 becomes available. As for pricing, the dm3 looks pretty attractive, with AMD versions having a starting price of $549 while Intel models coming in with a starting price of $649. Definitely cheaper than a MacBook Pro 13 inch system!

HP launches “You On You” Project on YouTube

Those of you into making videos for YouTube might like this one. Starting today, HP and YouTube are running a project/contest called “HP You on You” which invites all of you to create and share videos that express who you are. The tagline – “Declare Your Story” – says it all. The contest challenges all of you to tell something about yourself (hopefully not everything about yourself) or your story (whatever that might be) in the context of a YouTube video. There’s only one catch – you can’t show your face in the videos.

Contestants will be able to use new video creation tools on YouTube which include video remixing and webcam video tools to help them create their shared videos.

The contest will be open globally and localized for 21 YouTube English and non-English countries. Each week, a panel of experts will select the top 20 videos as semifinalists. YouTube users will then vote to select the top four videos from the 20 weekly semifinalists – all of whom will be in the running for the grand prize of $40,000 along with some YouTube recognition. After six weeks, each of the 100 semifinalists selected by YouTube will receive a new HP Artist Edition notebook PC and the 20 finalists selected by YouTube viewers will each receive $2500 dollars. First place will get $40,000, second place will get $20,000 and third place will get $15,000. There will be other prizes available as well

HP introduces new Pavilion dv2z with additional AMD Athlon Neo processor options

HP expanded their thin and light notebook lineup yesterday with the introduction of the new dv2z series. The dv2z has a starting price of $599, measures less than an inch thick, weighs around 3.81 pounds, and features a 12.1 inch diagonal mercury-free LED widescreen display.

The $599 base configuration comes with the following specs:

Espresso black color
Windows Vista Home Basic
AMD Athlon Neo processor MV-40 clocked at 1.6GHz
1GB RAM
250GB 5400RPM SATA HDD
ATI Radeon X1250 graphics
12.1 inch WXGA display (1280 x 800)
Webcam
Wi-Fi card
6 cell lithium ion battery

You can also opt for more powerful processor options including a new AMD Athlon Neo X2 Dual Core Processor (Model L335) clocked at 1.6GHz for $25 dollars more or the AMD Turion Neo X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor Model L625 clocked at 1.6GHz for an additional $75 dollars. (Note – if you do opt for the Turion Neo X2, HP requires that you update to Windows Vista Home Premium (which adds $30 dollars to the price) and to an ATI Mobility Radeon HD3410 (which adds $50 dollars to the price) – bringing the overall price to $754.99. Still not bad but something to remember if you want the more powerful Turion processor.

HP introduces three new Minis – the Mini 110 XP, Mini 110 Mi, and Mini 1101

[Republished from NetbookTech] HP continues their march into the netbook market with the introduction of three new netbook models – the HP Mini 110 XP Edition, HP Mini 110 Mobile Internet (Mi) Edition, and the HP Mini 1101. The Mini 110 XP and Mini 110 Mi are designed for “Internet-centric” consumers while the HP Mini 1101 is ideal as a “companion PC” for business users.

These new 10.1 inch netbooks have a starting weight of 2.33 pounds and measure just over one inch thick. You’ll can choose from either a 10.1 inch standard display or a 10.1 inch high definition LED widescreen display. Other common features include the Intel Atom N270 or N280 processor, a 92 percent keyboard, built-in webcam and microphone, built-in VGA port, and a 5 in 1 media card reader.

Here are additional details to the three new netbooks:

Up to 1GB of RAM
Either 32 GB SSD or 160GB HDD
Optional WWAN
Optional Broadcom Crystal HD Enhanced Video Accelerator available in July which allows for 1080p HD content playback

Up to 2GB of RAM
Up to 250GB HDD

HP Mini 1101:

Available in either Windows XP Home, Windows XP Pro, Windows Vista
Two optional batteries – 3 cell or 6 cell
Optional integrated HP Mobile Broadband

Both the Mini 110 XP and Mini 110 Mi editions will be available in your choice of Pink Chic, Black Swirl or White Swirl HP Imprint finishes, while the business oriented Mini 1101 will be available only in the Black Swirl finish.

The HP Mini 110 XP Edition and the Mini 110 Mi will be available in Black Swirl in the US starting on June 10 with a starting price of $329.99 and $279.99 respectively
The HP Mini 110 XP in Pink Chic and White Swirl will be available in the U.S. starting on July 8th. Pricing to be determined
The HP Mini 1101 in high gloss black starts at $329 and will be available starting on June 1st.

Costco offering HP EX485 with free 500GB HDD for $547.99

Just wanted to mention a great deal that is now available over at Costco.com. The vendor is now offering the HP EX485 750GB MediaSmart Windows Home Server box for $547.99 after a $50 dollar manufacturer discount which will be automatically deducted at checkout. In addition, Costco will also package a free Western Digital 500GB Caviar Blue SATA hard drive (WD5000AAKS). Not a bad deal at all – I might have to consider it since my current HP EX470 box is nearly out of space.

HP MediaSmart Server LX195 now available for $399.99

Well, we never did see a press release from HP about their new MediaSmart Server LX195 Windows Home Server product but guess what? It’s in-stock and available for purchase at HPshopping.com for $399.99.

As eHomeUpgrade discovered last week, the LX195 is an Atom-powered Windows Home Server box in a chassis that’s notably different (and smaller) than HP’s previous WHS product offerings.

The only question we had at the time was – exactly how many internal drive bays were there for the LX195? Unfortunately we got the answer – ONE. Yes ONE. Boo. However, you do get 4 USB 2.0 ports (though no eSATA ports unfortunately).

But then again, it’s pretty easy to see that HP intends to market the LX195 has a starter Windows Home Server box. It’s fairly inexpensive; it’s ideal for families that need a good backup solution but don’t need terabytes of disk space; it’s easy to setup, and it’s good looking too! And the bonus? If you do need extra capacity – you could always add external USB drives. Not ideal but definitely a way to upgrade.

Now with that said, here are the major specs for the LX195:
