The reason for the new receivers?  HDMI 1.4.

If you plan on routing that A/V signal from your 3D Blu-ray player to your receiver and then to your 3D HDTV then you’ll need a receiver with support for HDMI 1.4. (yeah that pretty much sucks for me since I  just recently purchased a new Denon receiver during the holidays – it supports HDMI 1.3 – ugh).

One of the first manufacturers out of the starting gate this month will be Onkyo as they’ve announced three new A/V receivers and three home theater systems (Onkyo calls the “home theater in a box or HTiB”– all with support for HDMI 1.4. Common features on all of the Onkyo systems include:

Philips is readying two new SoundSphere Hi-Fi home audio systems – the MCi900 and MCD900. Both Hi-Fi systems feature two speakers with “free floating” tweeters residing outside the speaker enclosure, and 100 watts of power.

You’ll also find a built-in CD player, USB ports for connecting external music sources, a built-in color display. The MCi900 adds Philips Streamium technology allowing you to stream Internet radio or music from a networked PC. There’sl also find a 160GB hard drive for storing music locally.
