(do you sense the sarcasm yet?)

Sony one-ups the competition today with the announcement of the new Sony S Series Walkman Video MP3 player which now features “high quality built-in stereo speakers”. Yup.. that’s right folks – this new media player has built-in stereo speakers which according to Katie O’Brien, manager of the Walkman business unit at Sony adds “a new social element to the world of digital music and video.”. Don’t you love it? Add a pair of speakers and your device is now “social”.

Other features of the S Series Walkman (which are arguably much more respectable) include:

Bright high contrast 2.4 inch QVGA LCD display with fast response time

Clear Audio and Digital Linear Phase Speaker System for high quality sound

Built-in FM tuner

Headphones, mini USB cable, and hands-free stand included

Voice and FM recording function

Built-in alarm clock with sleep timer

Supports wide variety of codecs including MP3, WMA (DRM), AAC (nonDRM), and Linear PCM.

Video codec support includes AVC (H.264/AVC) Baseline Profle, MPEG-4 and WMV(DRM)

Long lasting battery – 42 hours of music or 6.5 hours of video

Available in 8 or 16GB capacities

The S Series Walkman will be available in several colors including black, red, violet and pink. AND OK.. if there’s one nice thing about the new S Series, it would have to be the pricing. The 8GB capacity will be available for around $110 while the 16GB model will be available for $130 dollars.
Zune HD pricing is now official. Microsoft announced today that you can begin pre-ordering the 16GB and 32GB Zune at various locations such as Amazon.com, Best Buy, Walmart, and the Microsoft Store. Prices were originally leaked courtesy of Amazon.com earlier this week and guess what? Those prices were indeed correct (I know.. shocking). So here are the details.

As most of you know, the Zune HD will be available in two storage capacities – a 16GB model and a 32GB model. The 16GB Zune HD will be available for a mere $219.99 while the 32GB model will be available for a low price of $289.99.

AND in case you’ve been under a rock for the last six months or so, the Zune HD will feature a built-in HD radio receiver, support for HD video playback, multi-touch navigation, a beautiful OLED display, support for games, a built-in web browser, and of course Wi-Fi connectivity. The unit measures 52.7 x 102.1 x 8.9mm and weighs approximately 2.6 oz.

I absolutely love the pricing of the Zune HD. Microsoft’s gone ahead and done the right thing for once with the Zune – price it BELOW competing Apple iPod products. Let’s face it, if the 32GB Zune HD was priced at the same price point as the 32GB iPod touch, then folks will flock to the iPod touch if only for one reason – the App Store support. At $289.99, the 32GB Zune HD is $110 dollars less than a comparable 32GB iPod touch – a bargain for the flash storage capacity, touch screen display, and a friggin HD receiver!!! OK.. so with that I can probably live without the App store support (tho Microsoft, it would be cool if we could download third party apps for the Zune!!!).

OK.. so when is this all coming out? Pre-order is NOW and units will become available starting on Sept. 15th. Go get em!

Sony finally let the cat out of the bag with the introduction of their new flagship Walkman Video MP3 player today called the X-series Walkman (NWZ-X1000 models). The media player features Wi-Fi connectivity, a beautiful OLED touch-screen display, Sony Digital Clear Audio technologies, and support for Internet content. Let’s spend a bit of time on each of the new features found in the X-series.

Display:

3 inch OLED touch-screen display

180 degree viewing angle

Movie image can be adjusted based on user preferences

New scene scroll navigation feature allows users to easily scroll through a movie. Simply select your preferred time increment and then swipe across the screen to scroll fwd or back through scenes

Audio technologies:

First video MP3 player to feature integrated digital noise cancelling (DNC)technologies to help block out ambient noise

Comes with 13.5 mm EX headphones which also have an embedded small microphone to measure “intrusive noise”. This allows the software-based DNC filter to create an “optimal inverted sound wave” that reduces the noise up to 98 percent.

User can select custom settings for different listening environments (e.g. airplane, bus/train, office etc)

Turn on DNC feature even without listening to music for peace and quiet

Content

Supports popular audio and video codecs including WMV files, AVC Baseline (H.264) and MPEG-4

FM tuner

Supports Slacker radio. When you’re near a Wi-Fi hotspot, content can be refreshed and buffered on the player

Comes with Content Transfer software for easy drag and drop transfer of non-DRM music, videos, podcasts, and playlists etc

Other notable features:

33 hour battery life for music playback

9 hour battery life for video playback

Wi-Fi support

Internet web browser

Subscribe and refresh podcasts

Search/playback content on YouTube

Related Links function when playing your favorite songs allows you to quickly search complementary content via YouTube

Buttons for volume, play/pause, rewind/fast forward, lock, and noise cancelling

Not too shabby eh? Now let’s talk about availability and price. You can pre-order the new Walkman players now over at SonyStyle.com with models expected to ship in mid-June. As for pricing – it’s basically the same as iPod touch pricing. The 16GB NWZ- X1051 is priced at $299 while the 32GB NWZ- X1061 is priced at $399.

The question for all of you to decide is – do you get the iPod touch or do you get this Sony X-series Walkman. Right off the bat – the mere fact that the iPod touch has an incredibly diverse App Store gives the media player an edge over anyone else out there. So .. Sony – if you want to stay competitive, you’re either going to need to add many MANY more features or you’re going to need to price the X-series at an even lower price point down the road.

“What the hell…”

That was my first reaction when I saw a picture of these devices. For a second, I thought these were fancy looking mallets for air hockey tables or something. However, they are in fact the new mobiBlu UFO MP3 players.

No.. they do not fly, nor do they levitate (though Fox Mulder might like a pair of these for fun). They are in fact just portable MP3 players with built-in NXT flat panel speakers.

Measuring a mere 90 x 42 mm, the UFO MP3 player is available in storage sizes ranging from 512MB to 8GB. There’s a USB port allowing you to connect the player to your PC, a 3.5 mm audio jack for other devices, and built-in Bluetooth wireless for pairing with other devices. File format support include MP3, WMA, ASF, and OGG. Battery life is 6 hours in speaker mode and 15 hours in earphone mode.

mobiBlu also has a Bluetooth speaker only model of the UFO (without the built-in MP3 player).

Looking to make the portable music player fun, customizable, and inexpensive, SanDisk today, introduced their all new slotMusic player. Consumers can purchase a standard slotMusic player for $19.99 or an artist-branded slotMusic player for $34.99 which comes bundled with a 1GB slotMusic card. And what’s a slotMusic card you ask? It’s basically a microSD card filled with DRM-free MP3 music. Nearly 40 artists across four major labels are available on slotMusic cards. These cards can also be used on any device that supports the microSD format.

The slotMusic card is also the central focus behind the slotMusic player. SanDisk is attempting to say that with the slotMusic player, you won’t need a computer anymore. Simply buy a slotMusic card and place it inside the player. Of course this idea isn’t new at all. It’s basically modeled after the tape cassette/cd player business of yesteryear. Hmm.. wasn’t the whole point of the digital music player to get AWAY from that business?

In any case, the features of the slotMusic player are as follows:

Customizable through the use of interchangeable shells

microSDHC support

Replaceable AAA battery for up to 15 hours of playback

Headphone jack

Supports MP3, OGG, FLAC, WMA without DRM

Measures 2.84″ x 1.45″ x .60″ and weighs 1.7 oz

SanDisk has also designed a line of accessories to support the new slotMusic player which already comes with a customizable black shell, earphones, and battery.

(reprinted from ZuneSphere.com) We’re nearing the third anniversary of the Zune (ok.. we’re about two months) so if you’re Microsoft, what do you do? Keep them coming of course! Unlike the last two years, you won’t see any new hardware designs for the Zune this year. Instead, Microsoft decided to release new storage capacities for the Zune and also update the firmware and Zune software application.

Let’s first cover the hardware changes which really are not changes as much as additions. There’s a new hard drive based Zune out – the new Zune 120GB model or Zune 120 for short. On the flash front, Microsoft upped the storage amounts to 16GB there – no real surprise there of course given that iPod touch devices are already available in 16GB models. I must say it’s slightly disappointing that Microsoft didn’t announce new hardware changes to the Zune to compete more effectively against the iPod touch.. but then again, the software changes are indeed nice.

Ah yes.. the software changes. This is certainly where things get exciting. First off, Microsoft has finally unleashed more capabilities to the built-in Wi-Fi support on the Zune. In the first iteration of the Zune, we saw the notion of being able to share music between Zune devices. Cute.. neat.. but somewhat useless considering I had to travel a tens of MILES to find the next Zune user! In the second iteration, Microsoft finally allowed for wireless syncing of the Zune. Another cool feature.. useful at times too.. but in practice, I never really used it. Now, in the third iteration of the software, Microsoft finally allows for wireless downloads of music straight to the Zune via the Zune Marketplace. Finally – a truly useful feature of the Wi-Fi connectivity support on the Zune. What makes this even sweeter is the notion that with a Zune Pass subscription, you could easily listen to millions of songs on demand straight from the marketplace anytime you’re near a Wi-Fi hotspot. This is truly where an all-you-can-eat subscription makes a lot of sense. Sure it’s not free like Pandora.. but at least 1) you won’t have to worry about whether the service will stay alive or not and 2) you get access to WAY more titles!

Now to make this all possible, your Zune will now be able to connect to thousands of Wi-Fi hotspots (w00t!). Unfortunately, since the Zune does not have a built-in web browser, you won’t be able to connect to hotspots that required browser logins.

As for navigating the Zune marketplace on the Zune, users will be able to browse lists of featured new releases, top songs and albums sorted by genre, or use the on-screen keyboard to type a song title.

If you’re a big user of the built-in FM receiver on the Zune, then you’ll probably appreciate the new “Buy from FM” feature being introduced with the third iteration of the Zune software. Buy from FM lets customers tag and purchase songs they hear on the radio directly from their Zune device. If the user is near a Wi-Fi hotspot, they can purchase and directly download the track. If they’re not near a Wi-Fi hotspot, the track gets queued for download when the user either connects to their PC or connects to a Wi-Fi hotspot later on. I’m not a big user of the built-in FM radio myself.. but this might change things finally. There are certainly many many instances where I find myself saying “Gee.. who’s this person I’m listening to?”

Think that’s it? Nope.. there’s more folks. Microsoft also announced a new “Channels” feature on the Zune software. You can view and listen to expert-created channels or you can have the Zune software create custom channels for each user based on their favorite artists and genres. If you want to listen to the expert channels, you’ll need a Zune Pass subscription to get at everything – or you can purchase songs one at a time in an a la carte fashion if you don’t have the pass.

There’s also the “Personal Picks” feature which is basically a new recommendations system for users. When you log into the Zune Marketplace, you’ll find a new “Picks” area where suggested artists, albums, and tracks will appear. This is all done via a new Zune recommendation algorithm that uses information from the Zune Social.

Speaking of Zune Social, the online music community now gets a bit more powerful thanks to the Zune Card. Previously, you could see what your friends were listening to on the Zune Social – now you can take there tracks with you on the go via the Zune Card. A Zune Card is a real-time playlist of each user’s favorite and recently played tracks. The card can be accessed from the web or within the Zune software application or synced to the Zune device. Playlists will even automatically update when the Zune connects to a wireless hotspot – very cool. Overall – this is certainly a very neat feature on the Zune. You can finally listen to what your friends are listening to – assuming of course you can get your friends to use the Zune instead of some other competing music player! (more reasons to do so now!)

Two other new features on the Zune software are:

Mixview. Customers can select an artist, album or Zune Card to activate a dynamic, visual mosaic of related music and listeners. With each click users can take the view in a new direction, creating a fun, graphical way to discover new music. Mixview works with users’ current collection of music, in addition to tracks and albums from across the Zune Marketplace.

Now Playing. The improved Now Playing view is more interactive and cinematic. Users can sit back and enjoy the combination of great artist imagery, colorful effects, bio information and data from the Zune online music community, all combined in a full-screen view. They can also click to dive deeper into the music behind the picture, providing another great way to interact with their collection.

Finally, on the firmware front, other small but notable features on the Zune include:

Two free games for the Zune – Hexic and Texas Hold ‘Em. Yes.. games on the Zune are indeed real

Support for audiobooks finally!

Support for audible!

Support for OverDrive

So.. what’s the catch in all of this? Nothing folks. The great part about the Zune experience for existing Zune users is the fact that EVERYONE with a Zune will get these new features for free!! So if you have an original Zune 30 – not a problem – go ahead and update the firmware next week. If you have a Zune 80 – not a problem too! There are no fees to pay, no software to buy.. just upgrade (pray a little), and go!

Finally, the current pricing plans are as follows:

120GB Zune – $249.99

80GB Zune – $229.99

16GB Zune – $199.00

8GB Zune – $149.99

4GB Zune – $129.99

It’s certainly nice to see the Zune team continuing to advance the Zune on the feature and software front. Though it would have been nice to see new hardware models aside from storage upgrades, the mere fact that these new software updates are made available to ALL Zune users is certainly something Microsoft can be proud of.

Aside from the larger drive, it appears the Zune 120 will be functionally and physically the same as the Zune 80. No word on pricing or availability but it’s a safe bet that the Zune 120 will be around $299. If Microsoft wants to try and encourage sales of the Zune, it might be a good idea to drop the price of the Zune 80 and make the Zune 120 available for $249. Nice thought right?

Archos introduced three new connected devices today as part of their new “Internet Media Tablets” product lineup – the Archos 5, the Archos 7, and the Archos 5g. These players offer many of the same features found in previous Archos models except now, there’s a large touchscreen display and even 3G connectivity on the Archos 5g model. The focus of these devices is clearly on the Internet – following the trend that Apple established with the iPhone and iPod touch. The Archos 5 is the company’s flagship product featuring a 5 inch display and a wealth of features. The Archos 5g adds 3.5G HSDPA support and the Archos 7 increases the display size to 7 inches while keeping the same resolution.

On the application front, the new Archos Internet Media Tablets support features such as:

Web browsing via a free Opera browser
