MicrosoftCourier

Speaking of killing off products, Engadget reports that Microsoft has decided to end the very cool looking Courier dual-screen tablet PC project. Courier made big news last fall when video clips of the skunkworks project hit the web. According to Frank Shaw, VP of Microsoft corporate communications:

At any given time, across any of our business groups, there are new ideas being investigated, tested, and incubated. It’s in Microsoft’s DNA to continually develop and incubate new technologies to foster productivity and creativity. The “Courier” project is an example of this type of effort and its technologies will be evaluated for use in future Microsoft offerings, but we have no plans to build such a device at this time.

Unfortunately we’ll never know how real Courier actually was beyond the video renderings shown off on the web. Based on the positive web reaction, we do hope that Microsoft will take some of the learnings and apply it to future products. Courier was certainly a very cool concept – something that might have been slightly ahead of its time?
