Yes folks, Motorola is indeed working on the next version of the Google Phone.

Sanjay Jha, Motorola’s co-CEO, confirmed on a conference call with analysts yesterday that the company was planning to release 20 smartphones this year including “one direct-to-consumer device with Google.”

According to EnterpriseMobilityToday.com, a Google spokesperson confirmed that a Motorola phone was indeed planned but declined to offer additional details.

The announcement of the Motorola Google Phone was a small bright spot for Motorola as it announced that fourth quarter revenue dropped 20 percent year over year to $5.7 billion. Mobile phone sales dropped even further, down 22 percent to $1.8 billion.

A4 We all know by now that the newly announced Apple iPad has a custom-designed Apple processor on the inside dubbed the “Apple A4”. More than a general purpose processor, the A4 is based on a “System-on-a-chip” (SoC) design integrating many other functionalities (including a graphics core, and memory controller) onto the same die.

That’s great and all but what I really want to know is – what exactly is at the heart of the A4? The video demonstrations we’ve seen thus far show the iPad to be a blazingly fast device. This not your average iPhone 3GS people.

Well according to an article over at HardwareCentral.com, the A4 is built around a derivative of the ARM Cortex-A9 MPCore (multi-core processor) and utilizing an ARM GPU known as the Mali 50-Series. If you’re interested in knowing more about the Cortex-A9 MPCore, check out ARM’s webpage on the processor architecture here. You can read more about the Mali GPUs here.

Interestingly enough, the A4 should have additional headroom in terms of clock speed since the Cortex-A9 supports higher clock speeds. Many third party licensees have opted to stay at 1GHz since that appears to be the sweet spot between performance and thermals. You know the hackers out there will try to overclock this baby!

You can read more about the A4 and the iPad internals over at HardwareCentral.com.

Since everyone and their parents appear to be talking about the new Apple iPad, I thought it would be interesting to revisit the HP Slate which was announced and demoed at CES 2010. To that end, I came across a new video released by HP where HP Spokesperson Greta Schlender interviews Phil McKinney, CTO of HP’s Personal Systems Group, about the upcoming HP Slate. Here are the tidbits:

  • Original concept began 5 years ago in the UK around an e-reader platform
  • HP asked users what they liked/didn’t like about the original concept device
  • Users wanted a device that did more than just text. They wanted all of their media on the Slate device. Music, videos, books, the web etc.
  • The HP Slate fits between a smartphone and a netbook – something small and light
  • So why release a device now? Phil thinks this year is the “perfect storm of innovation”. The hardware is finally cheap enough (ultra-low voltage processors), the OS is finally touch-aware enough (Windows 7), and the touch-hardware is finally up to par).
  • As for when? HP is committing to 2010.

apple ipad with 3g

We’ve covered the features and technical specifications for the newly announced Apple iPad. Let’s now get into the 3G mobile broadband pricing for those interested in the iPad Wi-F- + 3G model. Just to recap, there are two iPad models, the iPad with Wi-Fi, and the iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G.

Prices for the iPad with Wi-Fi are as follows:

  • 16GB iPad – $499
  • 32GB iPad – $599
  • 64GB iPad – $699

Prices for the iPad with Wi-Fi and 3G are as follows:

  • 16GB iPad – $629
  • 32GB iPad – $729
  • 64GB iPad – $829

Yes this means you are paying a $130 dollar premium to have a 3G chipset within the iPad. Of course, having 3G support is only part of the equation. You’ll still need to sign up for 3G service and to that end, Apple has partnered again with AT&T to offer 3G mobile broadband access.

However, unlike practically all other mobile broadband devices, you won’t have to sign up for a mobile broadband contract with AT&T. You will have two price plans to choose from – both without an annual contract.

  • $14.99 per month for 250MB of data per month
  • $29.99 per month for unlimited data per month

Both AT&T plans also entitle you to free access to AT&T nationwide Wi-Fi hotspots.

You’ll be able to purchase and cancel the AT&T mobile broadband contract directly from the iPad.
