HP expands thin and light category with HP ProBook 5310m and Pavilion dm3
HP extends their presence in the thin and light notebook market with the introduction of two new systems – the HP ProBook 5310m which they claim to be the “world’s thinnest full-performance notebook PC”, and the HP Pavilion dm3, a slim consumer-oriented notebook. Let’s get right down to the details shall we?
HP ProBook 5310m:
- Measures 0.9 inches thin and weighs a mere 3.7 pounds
- 13.3 inch diagonal LED HD display
- Intel Core 2 Duo SP9300 processor clocked at 2.26GHz (also available with Intel Celeron SU2300 dual core ultra-low-voltage processor clocked at 1.2 GHz)
- Up to 7 hours of battery life with a standard lithium-polymer battery. Optional six cell battery available later this year will further increase battery run time
- HP QuickWeb allows users quick access to the web in seconds when the notebook is shut down (in approximately 20 seconds)
- HP QuickLook3 allows users to look up and respond to email, calendar, and contacts without having to boot up the notebook
- Integrated HP Mobile Broadband provided by Gobi
- Durable aluminum display enclosure
- Palm rest
- Magnesium allow bottom case
- 2 megapixel webcam with dual microphone array
- 3D DriveGuard protects the notebook hard drive against impacts, bumps, or drops via a built-in three-axis accelerometer.

Pricing starts as follows:
- ProBook 5310m with Intel Celeron Dual Core will have a starting price of $699
- ProBook 5310m with Intel Core 2 Duo will have a starting price of $899
Both notebooks are now available in the Asia-Pacific region with the Vista OS. Expect the notebook to be available in the rest of the globe starting on Oct 22nd with Windows 7.

HP Pavilion dm3:
The Pavilion dm3 is HP’s next model in their thin and light consumer notebook category first introduced with the dv2 earlier this year. Features of the dm3 include:
- Choice of Intel Core 2 Duo, AMD Neo dual core processors
- Choice of Intel shared, ATI, or NVIDIA discrete graphics
- When the AMD Neo and ATI combination are paired, the dm3 offers PowerXpress which provides performance graphics when plugged in and shared graphics with unplugged to help conserve battery life
- Preloaded with HP MediaSmart software for management and enjoyment of digital music, Internet TV, videos, photos etc.
- Dedicated function keys for quick access to media controls
- HD options up to 500GB
- Measures less than one inch thin and weighs only 4.2 pounds
- Lightweight brushed aluminum chassis in Modern Argento gray
- Optional built-in WWAN for wireless connectivity
- Low-light HP VGA webcam
- Built-in microphone
- Optional external Blu-ray drive
- Magnesium bottom
- Large touchpad with multi-touch functions

As with many of today’s HP announcements, don’t expect the Pavilion dm3 to launch before Windows 7 becomes available. As for pricing, the dm3 looks pretty attractive, with AMD versions having a starting price of $549 while Intel models coming in with a starting price of $649. Definitely cheaper than a MacBook Pro 13 inch system!
