Here’s a cool application of E Ink technology. Samsung and Verizon Wireless have announced the availability of the new Samsung Alias 2 dual-hinge messaging phone featuring a “transforming” keypad utilizing E Ink technology.

Why is this so cool?

Thanks to E Ink tech, the handset’s keyboard literally changes based on the mode of the handset and the user preferences – open it vertically as a flip phone and you’ve got yourself a traditional numeric keypad which can also change into a alpha-only keypad. Flip the phone into landscape mode, and the keypad transforms into a QWERTY keyboard which can also change to a numeric one with symbols.

Pretty neat eh? Yeah we thought so too.

Other features and specs to the Alias 2 include:

  • Supports RemoSync allowing customers to sync corporate e-mail, contacts, and calendars from their office PCs
  • 2.0 megapixel camera
  • Video capture
  • Bluetooth
  • VZ Navigator support
  • Visual Voice Mail support
  • Mobile Web, Email, IM, Picture and Video messaging support
  • microSD slot
  • Personal organizer software

The Samsung Alias 2 is available now for $79.99 after a $50 dollar mail-in rebate and a new two year agreement.
