Nokia ships 1 millionth 5800 XpressMusic handset
It looks like the new Nokia 5800 XpressMusic handset is doing pretty well for itself. Nokia announced on Friday that they have now shipped 1 million 5800 XpressMusic handsets. This announcement also happened to coincide with the launch of the touch-screen handset over in the U.K. (pictures of the event provided by Nokia) where around 150 customers line up at the flagship UK Nokia store to take a look at the new handset.
The 5800 was formally announced in October with shipments to various markets including Russia, Spain, India, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Finland occurring in November of ‘08.
In case you’ve forgotten about the 5800 XpressMusic since the official announcement last year (and you can be forgiven for that since it takes Nokia so long to roll out their handsets here in the U.S.), the handset was their first “mass market” touch-screen device. Features include:
- Touch-based user interface with tactile feedback
- Beautiful 3.2 inch 16:9 aspect ratio display with a resolution of 640 x 360. The display supports up to 16 million colors (yes.. that would be MILLIONS of colors as opposed to thousands of colors in other handsets)
- Dedicated media bar touch key access to music, gallery, video center, web browser
- Voice command support
- Handwriting recognition
- Physical keys for app launch, send & end, power, camera, lock, volume control
- 3.5 mm AV connector
- microSD card slot
- Built-in surround stereo speakers
- 8GB of memory
- 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens
Look for Nokia to continue to roll out the handset in more markets this year.
Oh yes.. for anyone interested, I did snap up some pictures of the 5800 at CES 2009. Enjoy!
