30 percent of iPhone 3G customers switched from other carriers
Not surprisingly, a study by NPD Group found that 30 percent of customers who purchased the iPhone 3G handset between June and August switched over from a different mobile carrier. Of those that switched, 47 percent came from Verizon Wireless, 24 percent from T-Mobile, and 19 percent from Sprint. This goes to show that the availability of a high speed network (or at least the promise of such a network) grabbed many customers who were willing to bypass the first generation iPhone because the EDGE network was simply too slow. The report also mentioned that the smartphones with the highest unit sales were the iPhone 3G, the BlackBerry Curve, the BlackBerry Pearl, and the Palm Centro.
In other news, folks who track iPhone inventories are speculating that Apple has produced nearly 10 million iPhones. This is not to say that the company has sold that many iPhones as of yet – this is just an estimate of the production count which includes units in inventory, units in store displays, etc etc. Either way, it’s pretty clear that Apple has sold it’s share of iPhones thus far.
