Samsung goes green with new handsets
This is great stuff – slowly but surely, eco-friendly manufacturing and packaging techniques are making their way into a variety of industries and products. Case in point- the handheld mobile phone industry as demonstrated this week by Samsung’s showcase of new eco-friendly mobile phones. Displayed at the OR@S (Olympic Rendezvous @ Samsung) in Beijing this past week was the upcoming Samsung E200 Eco handset featuring a chassis manufactured completely out of “bio-plastic”. Bio-plastic “contains natural plant-based materials extracted from plant(s) such as corn” and helps to reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions during the manufacturing process.
The E200 Eco also utilizes non-coated recycled paper box for packaging. You can expect to see the E200 Eco in the European market sometime in early September
Samsung also showed two other eco-friendly handsets – the W510 and F268.
The W510 is also constructed out of bio-plastic and dos not use any heavy metals such as lead, mercury. or cadmium. The F268 handset is the first BFR (Brominated Flame Retardent)/PVC free mobile phone. The phone also comes with an alarm that turns on when the phone is fully charged – encouraging users to unplug the phone to conserve energy.
