Sony rumored to be entering mini-notebook market
PC World is reporting that Sony appears to planning to enter the mini-notebook market with a VIA based offering. A prototype of the notebook was being shown by contract manufacturer Quanta Computer at WiMax Expo which is being held alongside Computex in Taiwan. The notebook’s properties revealed that the processor was a VIA C7-M processor and the manufacturer was indeed Sony. Neither Quanta nor Sony would confirm that Sony was entering the space. The notebook is based on the VIA OpenBook reference design which was announced last week. The reference design has a 1.6GHz C7-M processor, a VX800 chipset, an 8.9 inch display with 1024 x 600 resolution, 80GB HDD storage, WiFi support, and Bluetooth support. The sample being shown by Quanta was running Windows Vista Home Basic and had 1GB of RAM and a 60GB HDD.
