Sony is announcing that the Rolly has finally “rolled” into the U.S. In case you’re not aware of the Rolly, it’s a palm-sized egg-shaped entertainment player that rolls and spins as music is played through its speakers. The Rolly is a combination of Sony’s portable audio technology and their artificial intelligence technology.

On the audio side, the Rolly features 180 degree horizontally opposed stereo speakers with neodymium magnets and an integrated digital amplifier.

On the robotics side, the device has six moving parts consisting of small arms, shoulders, and wheels as well as lighting capable of displaying around 700 different colors. It comes with choreography for three songs – “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (theme from “2001 – A Space Odyssey”), Avril Lavigne’s “Girlfriend” and Earth Wind and Fire’s “Boogie Wonderland.” as well as two additional demo tracks.

You can choreograph your own routine using the included Rolly Choreographer software. The software can either automatically create a routine for a song or you can create a custom routine. Routines can then be shared with other Rolly owners via the Rolly Go forum.

Other features include:

  • Bluetooth wireless support
  • 2GB memory
  • 5 hours of music playback
  • 4 hours of music and motion together
  • Supports AAC and MP3

Now for the somewhat bad news. If you’re interested in the Rolly, it’ll cost you about $400 dollars. Ouch.
