Intel Atom processors in short supply?
It appears that Intel is having trouble keeping up with demand for their new Atom processors – at least according to ASUStek president Jerry Shen. Mr. Shen told DigiTimes in this article that he “expects shortages (to) persist until September this year”. ASUS is planning to release an Atom-based Eee PC later this summer which will coexist with their current Celeron based Eee PC 900. The company expects to ship five million Eee PCs in July.
Perhaps what is more interesting is the fact that Intel is having trouble keeping up with the demand for their new low power processor. This points to a flurry of Atom-based offerings which isn’t surprising given the success of the Eee PC. More and more vendors are looking to release inexpensive, low power, ultra compact devices as a way to prop up continued softening demand of the PC industry. It’s clear that mobile continues to drive the PC market going forward.
