Netflix to charge extra for Blu-ray rentals
Oh no! Say it ain’t so Netflix!! Netflix will apparently begin to charge a “modest monthly premium” on top of their standard monthly subscription rates for Blu-ray rentals at some point later this year. Netflix CEO, Reed Hastings, announced this plan during the company’s earnings announcement. According to MarketWatch, Reed explained this move by stating that “purchasing Blu-ray DVDs costs more, both at retail and wholesale, than standard definition DVDs. Consumers are used to paying more for high-definition content..”
Great.. just because “consumers are used to paying more for high-definition content” doesn’t necessarily mean we’ll want to pay more for it for rentals. I suppose this goes right in line with online video services charging just a bit more for HD content. It’s a good thing that I don’t really rent Blu-ray content anyhow. There’s nothing on Blu-ray that’s truly that compelling for me to rent these days.
