Sony takes over the lead in North American LCD TV shipments
It looks like the 2007 Christmas shopping season was a solid one for Sony as they’ve taken the lead in LCD TV’s shipped in North America – jumping from fourth place to first place in the span of a single quarter. Not too shabby folks!
According to CNET’s Crave gadget blog, the following vendors made up the top five LCD vendors for the fourth quarter of 2007.
- Sony with 13 percent unit share
- Samsung with 12.3 percent
- Vizio with 10.7 percent
- Sharp with 8.4 percent
- Polaroid with 8.1 percent
HDTV sales were quite strong for all of 2007 and one could imagine sales were still solid leading up to the Super Bowl this past Sunday. However with fears of a recession in the air, could new unit sales begin to drop in 2008? Display Search analyst Paul Gagnon doesn’t think so – “Maybe there won’t be quite as many super-big-screen sales 40 and larger (as) we expected, but I wouldn’t expect a real dramatic shift. Consumer demand has been exceeding supply for quite a while”.
