Canon expanded their PowerShot A-series of digital cameras yesterday with the introduction of three new digi-cams – the PowerShot A590 IS, the PowerShot A580, and the PowerShot A470. Let’s quickly go down the feature list of each of these new cameras shall we?

First, here are the common features:

• Face Detection Technology – you know how this works. The camera detects for human faces in the frame and adjusts settings accordingly to make those faces look good. You can also instruct the camera to lock onto a single face via Face Select and Track
• Motion Detection Technology – the camera checks to see if the subject has moved and what adjustments are necessary for focus or exposure
• Hi-ISO Auto functions which work together with Motion Detection Technology to reduce the effect of blur in low light shooting
• AF-Point Zoom feature
• Automatic Red Eye Removal
• DIGIC III imaging processor
• Easy Mode for simplified camera operation (on A590 IS and A580)
• Special Scene Modes including a new Sunset shooting mode

Now onto the cameras themselves. The PowerShot A590 IS features:

• 8.0 megapixel resolution
• 4x zoomlens
• 19 shooting modes
• Fully automatic to fully manual
• Optical Image Stabilization
• Expand the range with one of three optional converter lens – 1.75x tele-converter, 0.7x wide converter, and 52mm close up lens
• Available in March for $179.99

The PowerShot A580 features:

• Most of the features of the A590 IS
• 4x optical zoom lens
• 8.0 megapixel resolution CCD-type image sensor
• Fully automatic or semi-automatic settings
• 16 shooting modes
• Available in March for $149.99

Finally, we have the PowerShot A470:

• Successor to the A460
• 7.1 megapixel resolution
• Four different color accents – blue, red, orange, and gray
• 3.4x optical zoom lens
• Manual overrides for ISO speed, exposure compensation, and white balance
• 14 shooting modes
• Available in March for $129.99
