As previously mentioned, there are good and bad news for Apple iPod touch users out there. First, let’s get to the good news. The iPod touch gets a major software update with five new applications made available to the device. The five apps are as follows:

  • Mail
  • Maps
  • Stocks
  • Weather
  • Notes

Other new features include Web Clips, Customizable Home Screen, and ability to watch iTunes movie rentals.

All these features and applications will be available on new iPod touch devices.

Now the bad news.

If you are a current owner of an iPod touch, you’ll need to pay $19.99 for these new features. Yes – the luxury tax hits Apple owners yet again! Sorry Apple – but that just seems ridiculous to force existing owners to pay nearly 20 dollars for software that all new owners will get by default. Let’s not forget that it didn’t cost Apple a whole lot of money to make these apps available for the iPod touch – especially since they’re already available for the iPhone. So why oh why are you hitting Apple users the 20 dollar tax to get these apps? This is where Apple could certainly follow Microsoft’s lead in giving updates away for free. Ahem..
