Picture_1_270x179 Ryan Kim of the San Francisco Chronicle wrote a story this morning contending that the Sony PlayStation 3 may have indeed found new life after Sony recently reduced the price for the next generation console system. The 80GB high end system went from $599 to $499 and a new mid-range version was introduced with a 40GB hard drive priced at $399. According to Howard Stringer, Sony Corp’s CEO, the lower prices “more than doubled sales of the PlayStation 3 in the United States in the first few weeks.” Sony supposedly sold more than 100,000 consoles in the week ending November 11th – this after selling on average 30,000 to 40,000 consoles previously.

No doubt this is an important holiday season for Sony. It’s been one year since the debut of the PlayStation 3 and sales have lagged behind both the Nintendo Wii and the Microsoft Xbox 360 which is now entering it’s second year of existence and still going strong. The PlayStation 3’s new lower price will certainly help boost sales for the holiday season but ultimately the console needs some killer games to really draw the attention away from the Wii and the Xbox 360.
