Google to launch OpenSocial - an open API for social networks
Open, open API’s are all the rage these days. Most every major web 2.0 player offers some sort of open API platform that let’s others tap into their technology. Just look at Facebook alone. Ever since the company opened up it’s social networking website to application developers out there, Facebook users have been deluged with thousands of applications. How many times has someone given you a SuperPoke, or a Vampire Bite of some sort? Heck - how many of you are playing Scrabble online? Creating a website is merely the beginning for many of these online companies. It’s about creating the plumbing for future applications that others have yet to consider developing. Case in point? Look at Google has they’ve announced a new API initiative called OpenSocial. The concept is fairly simple. Write web applications that use the OpenSocial API and any website that utilizes OpenSocial will be able to use your application. “Write once and run anywhere”.
OpenSocial is designed specifically for application developers who want to target the social networking scene popularized by the likes of Friendster, LinkedIn, hi5 etc. As of now, Facebook and MySpace have not joined the initiative. You can check out more about OpenSocial at http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial

Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player available as low as $198
Well it looks like standalone HD DVD players have broken yet another price point - this time the $200 dollar mark. Crave (via Engadget HD and the AVS Forums) has a posting up about how the entry level Toshiba HD-A2 HD DVD player can now be had for as little as $198. Keep in mind of course that the HD-A2 only supports up to 720p/1080i and not the full 1080p spec but that’s still pretty darn good for a standalone player. The only other way to get a cheap HD DVD unit is to go get yourself a Microsoft Xbox 360 HD DVD player add-on for $179 - assuming of course you have an Xbox 360 console already. Plus given that it’s nearly the holiday season, it’s not unreasonable to expect the HD-A2 will be as low as $180 by the end of the month or come Christmas time.

Samsung F700 rumored to be coming to the US
It looks like the Samsung F700 “Croix” Smartphone might be heading to the States soon. Various websites are reporting that the F700 might find its way to Verizon Wireless although it’s not clear if or when this would happen. Since the F700 is currently available for Vodafone, some minor design changes will need to occur. Obviously to support Verizon Wireless, the phone will have to switch support to CDMA and EV-DO, but other specs appear to remain the same including support for a 3 megapixel digital camera, a sliding QWERTY keyboard, and a textured surface.

PC Magazine reviews the 30 inch Gateway XHD3000 LCD Monitor
PC Magazine has published a review of the new Gateway XHD3000 desktop LCD monitor here on their website. The XHD3000 is one monster of a desktop LCD display with a screen size of 30 inches and a display resolution of 2560 x 1600. Other specs to the XHD3000 include the following:
- 16 x 10 aspect ratio
- 400 cd/m2 brightness
- 1000:1 contrast ratio
- 176 degree viewing angle
- 6ms response time
- 50,000 hour lamp life
- 16.7 million color support
- 20.8 lbs
- Measures 22.25 x 27.5 x 9.5 inches
- Gateway DXP Audio Sound System
Perhaps the coolest feature of this massive display is the wealth of connections the XHD3000 supports. You get:
- 1 HDMI port
- VGA port
- DVI-D port
- Composite video
- S-Video
- Component Video
- Discrete audio inputs with analog, coax, and SPDIF audio out

Gateway’s XHD3000 lets you connect a variety of devices, and does an excellent job displaying them at almost any resolution. It also offers one of the most flexible picture-in-picture features we’ve seen to date.

Leopard premiere at Third Street Promenade Apple Store
As most of you already know by now, Apple launched OS X 10.5, code named Leopard, last night at 6pm. I dropped by the Apple Store at the Third Street Promenade here in Santa Monica and snapped up some pictures of the event. I actually didn’t make it out there till about 7:30pm and there was still a sizable line in front of the store. Ironically enough, most of the folks on line were tourists who simply wanted to get into the store. Most actually didn’t even realize a new OS version was being launched. Oh yes… they were giving out free t-shirts and yes.. I got one
Here are some snapshots of the line and the front of the store taken with my iPhone.
Once inside, I took a walk around and guess what? I actually picked up my first Mac in about 6 years! Yes.. my last Mac system was the very cool iMac from 2001. This time around, I decided to pick up a Mac mini which came with the 10.5 DVD inside.

I’ve yet to set things up but hopefully you’ll hear more about it here at Krunker over the next few days. I still have to get my systems back up and running here in the office.. so that’s why news has been somewhat irratic.
That’s it for now.. I’m off to a Halloween Party! Stay safe everyone!
