Ubergizmo checks out DivX Technology Demo
Ubergizmo has published a nice write-up of their recent visit to a DivX technology demo presented by DivX co-founder Jerome Rota. The demo included a prototype networked media player capable of streaming DivX content from a networked PC to the television display at 720p resolutios.
Some interesting information from the article about the player include the following:
- It appears the device depends on a networked PC to provide the actual content – which also brings the price of the media player down to probably less than $99 dollars
- The networked PC performs the user interface rendering which is then delivered to the media player for decoding. Again – this helps reduce the cost of the media player as it relies on the capabilities on the PC instead of building in more powerful components
- DivX will provide an API to developers allowing them to create plug-ins and applications
- From the pictures snapped up by Ubergizmo, the player has a front facing USB port, wired Ethernet connectivity and Wi-Fi connectivity.
