VIA introduces 1 watt Eden ULV processor
If you’re looking for an x86 processor that focuses more on power efficiency rather than raw number crunching capabilities, then you’ll be happy to hear that VIA Technologies has announced their new 500MHz VIA Eden ULV (Ultra Low Voltage) processor with an incredible 1 watt power envelope. The 500MHz VIA Eden ULV has an idle power of just 0.1 watt and is a completely fanless design. Not only is the Eden ULV incredibly power efficient, it has an incredibly compact design with the chip measuring a mere 21 x 21 mm.
If you need a bit more processing power, the Eden ULV at 500MHz can be combined with the VIA CX700/M system media processor which is an advanced all-in-one digital media chipset with a maximum operating power of just 3.5 watts.
The new 500MHz VIA Eden ULV is specifically designed and targeted for users looking to develop ultra-low power platforms. Yes – the 500MHz speed isn’t going to run rings around your dual core platform, but there are many applications where low power consumption is more important than raw CPU performance.
You can read more about the processor here at VIA’s website with the “Making x86 More Accessible to the Embedded Market” whitepaper PDF file.
