Epson introduces new LED flatbed scanner
By this time, it’s pretty obvious that anything with LEDs is automatically really cool. When those LEDs actually serve a purpose, it becomes even more awesome.
Epson’s new scanner, the Perfection V500 Photo uses a row of LEDs to provide the light source rather than cold cathode fluorescent lamps. LEDs require no warm-up time and are more efficient, using less power and increasing scanning speeds. Additionally, the LEDs typically have a longer life-span than the fluorescent tubes. LEDs can also produce different colored lighting depending on the need: white light for documents and slides, and blue light for negatives.
Priced at approximately $250, the Epson Perfection features 6400dpi optical resolution and 48-bit color depth. The integration of LEDs is a welcome advance in flatbed scanning technology for amateurs and consumers.
