Toshiba launches 320GB 5400 2.5 inch HDD and 200GB 7200 2.5 inch HDD
It figures that right after I post a blurb about the new Toshiba 320GB notebook hard drive, I would come across the actual press release from Toshiba.
OK.. so here are the major details from the announcement. There’s actually two major announcements from Toshiba here. On one hand, yes, Toshiba has officially announced that they’ll be releasing the world’s first 320GB 2.5 inch notebook hard drive. This is the lead product to a new line of 2.5 inch 5400 RPM hard drives from Toshiba. In another product announcement, Toshiba has expanded into the high end 7200 RPM performance class with a family of products offering up to 200GB of storage capacity.
Here are the details to the new 5400 RPM 2.5 inch hard drives:
- New drive capacities ranging from 80GB to 320GB using both 120GB per platter and 160GB per platter designs in the MK-46GSX and MK-52GSX families
On the 7200 RPM front, Toshiba has the new MK-49GSY series which offers a max of 200GB. All three families (the MK-46GSX, the MK-52GSX, and the MK-49GSY) support Serial ATA with a 3.0 Gbps data transfer rate and free-fall sensor options on select models.

- Available in 80GB to 320GB capacities

- 8MB buffer
MKxx46GSX Family:
- Available in 80 GB to 250GB capacities
- Up to two platters
- Areal density of 200 Gbit/in2
- 12 ms average seek time
- 5400 RPM speed
- 8MB buffer
MKxx49GSY Family:
- Available in 80GB to 200GB capacities
- Up to two platters
- Areal density of 154 Gbit/in2
- 12 ms average seek time
- 7200 RPM speed
- 16MB buffer
