Apple Insider has published review of the newly released 24-inch iMac. As expected, the packaging and initial setup is easy and excellent, on par with what we’ve been accustomed to from Apple.

As far as the overall design of the iMac goes, the aluminum housing for the computer has lightened the system, and the compact keyboard is well-built and makes typing somewhat easier.

The new 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo offers an unparalleled level of performance. However the insuficient RAM (1 GB) and the Radeon HD 2600 Pro leaves something to be desired. Perhaps the greatest point of contention is the new glossy screen which can offer good picture quality (in certain lighting conditions) but at the expense of color accuracy.

What bothers me most, is the black trim around the screen, although this was never addressed in the review.

But despite the shortcomings, Apple Insider deems the new iMac a good product, with a score of 3.5 out of 5.

“For most buyers, the new iMac is still an easy recommendation for Mac veterans and most switchers. It’s just that a few key decisions may have robbed Apple of some potential customers who would have otherwise been within close reach.”

For those of us who have had Intel Core 2 Duos for some time now, there is little incentive to switch. Then again, most people don’t switch to Macs for computing power but rather for usability design.
