Finally – that external display on the mobile phone is going to be good for something other than showing the time or caller ID. Sprint announced plans today to launch the new Motorola RAZR V9m which is the first U.S. mobile phone to allow users to watch video content on both the internal display as well as the external display.

According to Sprint, the new RAZR V9m will support the Sprint Power Vision EVDO network and deliver multimedia content such as NFL Mobile, Sprint Music Store, Sprint TV, Sprint Power View, and Sprint Navigation.

To make video viewing experience somewhat enjoyable, the Motorola RAZR V9m has new display sizes that are atypical of the clamshell market. The external display features a 2 inch screen while the internal display has a 2.2 inch screen with twice the resolution. The external display also includes Motorola’s haptics technology which providers users with vibrating feedback in response to finger taps. Other features of the V9m include:

  • Thin and strong sculpted body with vacuum metalized finish
  • Large 2.0” QVGA 65k color external display with touch sensitive music keys
  • Large 2.2” QVGA 65k color internal display
  • CDMA 800, 1900 Mhz, 1X and EVDO support
  • Read/ignore text messages or get quick access to inbox, recent calls or music with the flip closed
  • Integrated 2.0 megapixel camera with 4x digital zoom
  • Messaging via MMS, SMS, Email
  • Streaming audio and video; video capture and playback
  • Stereo Bluetooth wireless technology supporting A2DP profile
  • Integrated music player that supports a variety of audio formats:  AAC, AAC+, enhanced AAC+, MP3,WMA,
  • Video formats supported: H.263, H.264, MPEG4
  • Connectivity featuring Micro USB, USB Mass Storage, and version 1.2, class 2 Bluetooth wireless technology
  • Up to 2 GB of additional storage space with an optional microSD memory card
  • Integrated version 1.2 Bluetooth wireless technology for imaging and printing capabilities

The new Motorola RAZR V9m will be available starting on August 22nd at Sprint.com and on Sept 4th in retail stores. The phone will cost $249 with a 2 year service agreement.
