Lenovo plans to sell $199 to rural China
Lenovo is looking to expand its market share by going after the rural Chinese market. The company plans on selling a basic computer system for as low as $199 to China’s large and mostly poor rural market. Lenovo isn’t the first company to go after this market either – Dell announced back in March that they would be selling a basic computer system for the Chinese market ranging in prices of $223 to $515. Lenovo denied that their new price point was a response to the Dell initiatives from earlier in the year – noting that the company has been selling low cost systems to China since 2004. The new Lenovo PC’s will range in cost from $199 to $399.
There’s no word on what the system specs would be for these low cost PCs. About the only thing we know thus far is that the low cost PC would work with the buyer’s television set.
I have to wonder though, even at a price point of $199, how many poor families in rural China will be willing to shell out nearly 1/3 of their YEARLY income for a computer system? $199 still seems a hefty price to pay for a computer in this part of the world.
