Sony to release Freeview TV Tuner for PS3
Folks living in areas with Freeview broadcasting service (sorry – that means none of us here in the U.S.) will be interested in this story. eHomeUpgrade is reporting that Sony plans on shipping a digital TV tuner for the PS3 that’s compatible with Freeview. There’s no information as to how this TV tuner will work in conjunction with the PS3. One would assume that Sony would roll out some sort of DVR service associated to the tuner and the PS3 – or at the very least an electronic program guide. This could also indicate the possibility that an ATSC tuner would be made available here in the U.S. Now folks – that’s just me surmising the possibilities so don’t assume that will happen. Of course even if an OTA ATSC tuner was made available, most customers would rather have some sort of CableCARD supporting solution since an OTA ATSC tuner would not work in conjunction with a cable box. Nevertheless, it’s nice to see Sony expand the capabilities of the PS3 through add-on accessory items. No word on price or release date.
