With the YouTube revolution firmly realized now, companies around the world are trying to figure out ways to capitalize the popularity of homemade user video content. Here’s another example of that – Sony has introduced a new device called the NSC-GS1 or MPEG4 Net Sharing Camcorder. This device captures either 5 megapixel digital still images or VGA quality MPEG-4 videos. Here are the main specifications:

  • MPEG-4 Video recording
  • 1/2.5″ CCD Imager
  • 4X Digital Zoom
  • SteadyShot Picture Stabilization System which uses motion sensors to detect and compensate for camera shake
  • 2.4 inch SwivelScreen LCD Display with 123K pixels – rotates up to 270 degrees
  • USB streaming – you can broadcast live  video with audio over the Internet using the USB interface
  • Lithium Ion battery
  • Choose from various scene selection modes including:Beach, Candle, Fireworks, High-Speed Shutter, Landscape, Snow, Soft Snap, Twilight, Twilight Portrait
  • Sony Picture Effect Modes including Monotone and Sepia
  • USB 2.0 interface
  • Memory Stick and Memory Stick PRO Duo Media Slot
  • 640 x 480 or 320 x 240 video recording
  • 5 megapixel digital camera
  • AAC-LC Dolby Digital Output

You can pre-order the camcorder for $199.99.  It’s interesting to note that despite the product name having the word “Camcorder”, the NSC-GS1 is every bit a digital camera as it is a digital camcorder. It used to be that camcorders would have grippled still shot capabilities. At 5 megapixels, the NSC-GS1 certainly appears to have the capabilities for solid still captures. The only thing I’m disappointed in initially with the NSC-GS1 is the lack of HD video recording. Then again – the device is only $199.99 right now.
