Research in Motion introduces the BlackBerry 8820 – Wi-Fi comes to BlackBerry
Wi-Fi finally meets the BlackBerry with the introduction of the newest Research in Motion mobile phone – the BlackBerry 8820. The 8820 is one of RIM’s thinnest BlackBerrys and features the following specifications:
- Quad band GSM/GPRS support
- EDGE network support
- Built-in GPS
- microSD/microSDHC slot
- Wi-Fi support (802.11 a/b/g networks)
- Support for WEP, WPA, and WPA2 security protocols
- Support for UMA which allows for fixed-mobile convergence services. With UMA in place, the BlackBerry 8820 can switch voice calls between GSM network and a Wi-Fi netwrork
- Speaker independent voice recognition
- Voice activated dialing
- Conference calling, speed dialing, and call forwarding
- Bluetooth 2.0 support with A2DP and AVRCP profiles
- Support for polyphonic, MP3, MIDI ringtones
- Support for both BlackBerry Enterprise Server and BlackBerry Internet Service
- Removable battery
The BlackBerry 8820 will be available around the world in the coming weeks. Here in the U.S., AT&T will be launching the 8820 later this summer.
