If this is true, I’m going to puke. OK.. maybe I won’t puke but I do this it’s disgusting. DailyTech is reporting that the newly announced 80GB Sony PlayStation 3 for the U.S. market will feature the same limited backwards compatibility found in the South Korean version of the 80GB PS3. IF this is true, it would mean the 80GB PS3 planned for the U.S. launch would not feature the embedded PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine and Graphics Synthesizer. This would also effectively mean that the only way to get full backwards compatibility would be to purchase the 60 GB or the scarce 20GB PS3 systems.

DailyTech deduced this by carefully looking at the product packaging image from the Sony PS3 announcement on Monday which says along the side:

“This product has limited backward compatibility with PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software. Many PlayStation and PlayStation 2 format software titles operate, but full compatibility is not guaranteed. Updating the system software may improve compatibility. Visit www.us.playstation.com for system software update.”

My only problem thus far with the DailyTech assessment is not knowing where they found the original high resolution image from. I can’t find it on the Sony website and the only location I did find a comparable image was from the blog posting here. When I zoomed in on this picture, the letters were illegible. So where the heck did DailyTech get their image from?

Despite that, I an inclined to believe the DailyTech posting for now simply because we know the system exists in South Korea. Knowing this also makes me truly hate the $599 model even more. So not only are you telling me that I have to spend $100 dollars more for 20GB of extra disk space and a packaged video game, I’m going to get a console that’s effectively hobbled than a cheaper version of the console. Just great. Folks – why even bother with the 80GB system? Get the 60GB if you really want a PS3!

Gee – I hope this story isn’t true.
