ps3 Sony President, Ryoji Chubachi, announced in an interview on Friday that the company had no plans in cutting the price of the Sony PlayStation 3 gaming console. Rumors had been swirling for several months that Sony was considering lowering the price to spur demand for the console.

Chubachi cited the past sales of the PlayStation and PlayStation 2 console as proof that things will eventually pick up for the PS3 console.

While history might prove Sony correct with the PS3, things are certainly a bit different this time around. Both the original PlayStation and the PS2 had different market circumstances to deal with. The first PlayStation was seen as the young upstart console while the PS2 had a year’s head start on the original Microsoft Xbox console. This time around however, the PS3 had to deal with far more competition than ever before. Microsoft already had a year long head start on the PS3 and the Wii was getting all the press and fanfare.

There’s also one other thing to consider. Ultimately it’s content that sells a game console – not necessarily the technology behind the console. If content is available across all three platforms and the PS3 isn’t dramatically better than say the Xbox 360, there’s much less of an incentive for a gamer to get the PS3. Sure the PS3 has Blu-ray built in – but how many gamers are actually purchasing the PlayStation 3 for the Blu-ray capabilities?

One has to wonder how long Sony will wait before they finally cave in and decide to lower the price of the PS3. They can probably afford to wait a bit longer but if the content doesn’t begin to drive PS3 sales, then something has to – and we all know lower prices will certainly help.
