Quick install guide to iPhone 1.0.1

As I just mentioned, Apple rolled out their first software update to the Apple iPhone tonight. The update fixed several issues within Safari as well as Webcore and Webkit. I thought I’d quickly show you snapshots of the update process - just in case you’re a little hesitant in performing the update. To get the update, simply dock your iPhone to your PC or Mac and start up iTunes. Once docked, you’ll see something similar to this within iTunes.

iTunes will notify you that there is a new update available to the iPhone. If you’re ready for the update, press the “Update” button and iTunes will download the update to your computer. Once the update is downloaded, a setup wizard will start up. Here are snapshots of the wizard from within Windows (Vista):

For anyone curious, the first link points to iPhone related manuals.

Here’s the link to the PDF version of the updated user’s manual. One tidbit I didn’t know about (but I’m sure you probably did). The SIM card within the iPhone can be used in other GSM phones.

Once you agree to the update, the software will be automatically installed onto your iPhone.

Once the software is installed, the iPhone will restart and then the update is finished. That’s it!

Electric Vehicle Not only Eco-friendly, but SUPER cute!

Think Nordic - a battery & electricity-run vehicle company based in Norway - is looking to market to the States its squishy-looking and very compact, environmentally-friendly car.
According to the CEO, Jan-Olaf Willums, the car will be Wi-Fi enabled - making it like a computer on wheels! The car has collected about $78 million from Silcon Valley & European investors. Willums’ goal is to ultimately change the way consumers buy and interact with their vehicles. Even taking a tip from Dell, they are only taking orders online, where buyers can also customize the choices for their cute & little, carbon-neutral car.
Think has indicated that they look to start selling in the United States in select cities by 2009.

I would gladly trade in my New Beetle (even though it’s my baby) for this car! No more gas? What a relief that would be to me - mostly my wallet, actually.

Blackberry Curve In Germany~

It’s hardly been a week since we all got a glimpse of the latest Blackberry model - and it’s just left some of us drooling for more. If you live in Germany, lucky for you since Vodafone has just announced that they will be picking up the Curve 8310! Yaaayy!
Apparently, this basic Curve model comes with a *bonus* - GPS. It will be released with Vodafone Navigator, “which is a server side navigation system a la Telenav” according to BoyGeniusReport~ Its GPS function is the only one that might come as a special surprise - everything else, like the 2.0MP camera, MP3 support, e-mail, internet browsing, speakerphone, etc. etc. is nothing out of the blue.
For the first 5,000 buyers, they’ll receive a 1GB microSD card & a hundred pre-loaded MP3’s from top music charts. These babies are priced at 99 euros - or USD 136.

NVIDIA picks up some market share in the graphics industry
Jon Peddie Research announced their research notes on estimated graphics shipments and supplier market share for the second calendar quarter of 2007. According to their estimates, NVIDIA made significant market gains during the quarter, while AMD and Intel saw typical results for the time period. The second calendar quarter is typically a fairly slow quarter for the computer industry so it’s interesting to see NVIDIA gain ground during this time period.
Total graphics shipments for the quarter was 81.3 million units - up three percent from last quarter and up 8.2 percent over the same quarter last year. According to Jon Peddie, NVIDIA was the clear winner in the desktop graphics business this quarter with 43 percent of units shipped compared to Intel’s 38.5 % and AMD’s 23 %. In the mobile market, Intel was the leader and grew slightly to 51.5 % while NVIDIA had 27 % and ATI had 21 %. Mobile chips continued to be a growth area for graphics claiming approximately 31.2 percent of the market with 24.5 million units overall (further proving the point that notebooks is where the money’s at in the PC industry these days)

Could a $50 dollar price drop be coming to the Xbox 360?

Could a $50 dollar price break be in store for the Microsoft Xbox 360 console? The folks at CheapAssGamer certainly think so as they’ve posted a picture on their website of a Toys R Us ad depicting the Xbox 360 with a price of $349.99. Yes and if we do the math - that amounts to a $50 dollar price reduction. According to the picture of the ad, the price break should begin sometime during the week of August 13th. It’s not clear whether the Xbox Core or Elite systems will also get a price drop.

Production snag for the Draco Zune?
Could the yet to be announced next generation Zune media player be facing production issues? The folks at Zune Scene are reporting that Microsoft is having a small design problem with their next generation Zune media player code named “Draco”. The design snag has caused a delay in production - pushing the production run from August 31st to September. Here’s a quote from the report:
According to our source (from inside Microsoft) Draco production began July 23 as scheduled. Scorpio ran into trouble and production was delayed. A significant percentage of the hard drive based Scorpio units were experiencing continuity problems between the flex cable and pcb. In other words, a wire was coming loose. Our source went on to explain how there were emergency meetings and a new flex cable design will be implemented. The new cable will have a “S” shape (not a folded accordion shape). It should prevent tension build up during assembly and solve the problem.
With production pushed back to September, the next gen Zune appears destined to come out in late October or early November. Although that would miss the back to school holiday shopping season, a November release would mark the one year anniversary of the first Zune player.
Finally, for those interested in the flash Zune rumors, Wired.com is reporting that the flash player went into production on July 23rd which means you might be seeing the new media player as early as September.

Correction: Linksys alive?
Apparently, Cisco President and CEO John Chambers spoke prematurely when he announced the loss of the Linksys brand. Media relations officer Karen Sohl clarified today in a statement:
What John was saying is that Cisco is moving to a single Cisco branding strategy.
Linksys consumer and SMB products will continue to be marketed under the Linksys brand and co-exist in the market with Cisco-branded connected home products over the near term.
Let’s hope it doesn’t get any more confusing than this.
