samsung 64GB SSD

Samsung has announced that they have begun mass producing 1.8 inch solid state drives (SSD) with 64GB of storage capacity. SSD drives are often seen as the next big thing for mobile computing as they offer several advantages over traditional mechanical hard drives. SSD drives have no moving parts which translates to greater reliability. They have faster boot times (and who doesn’t love the ability to boot Windows faster eh?) and faster application start times. Finally, they’re great for mobile systems because they require less power to operate than a comparable traditional 1.8 inch hard drive. The new Samsung 1.8 inch SSD consists of 64 eight Gigabit single level cell flash memory chips. This announcement from Samsung only proves the point that the company is driving forward rapidly into the SSD market.

One final thought about all of this. Could we be seeing the near future for digital audio players such as the Apple iPod? Since standard iPods utilize 1.8 inch hard drives, how hard would it be to replace the 60GB 1.8 inch hard drive with a 64 GB 1.8 inch SSD? Has anyone tried this yet (I’m sure someone must have).
